Cannot adjust video brightness on Gateway M-6827

After updating kernel to 2.6.27-11-generic, video brightness can no longer be adjusted up or down, whether by using hot-keys or applet. Both hot keys and applet register the changes graphically, but the actual brightness does not change.

Screen brightness adjustments had functioned previously with the attached video_brightnessup.sh and video_brightnessdown.sh files.
