Bug Description

Binary package hint: linux-image-2.6.27-11-generic

System is a MSI Wind U100 netbook. An instant regression visible while switching from 2.6.27-7-generic to 2.6.27-11-generic is that ethernet networking does not function. It appears down there in ifconfig, but keeps on acting as if the cable was disconnected.

There was no chance of a physical/network problem. The problem occured both when using DHCP and manual configuration.

This is a standard low-end Realtek card reported by lspci as:
01:00.0 Ethernet controller: Realtek Semiconductor Co., Ltd. RTL8101E/RTL8102E PCI Express Fast Ethernet controller (rev 02)

My system info is:
Description: Ubuntu 8.10
Release: 8.10
With all possible updates up to the most current version.

I have the same problem. Same laptop, same network card, Ubuntu 8.10. I tend to do upgrades immediately, yesterday morning networking wouldn't work, apparently because of upgrades I did on Wednesday. Turns out to be the kernel upgrade, if I start the computer with kernel ...27-7 al is well.

What I found peculiar is that when I provided a static ip address, the network card would say "connected to network" while there still was no connection to other computers. dhcp would not get a lease.

When running the 2.6.27-11 kernel, per the kernel team's bug policy, can you please attach the following information. Please be sure to attach each file as a separate attachment.

* cat /proc/version_signature > version.log

* sudo lspci -vvnn > lspci-vvnn.log

i got a very funny workaround to boot on 2.6.27-11.

boot using recovery mode... restart x-server... resume boot. hope this works for you.
