Bug Description

I have succesflly made a new installation of Ubuntu 5.04, followed by a successfull transition to 6.06 SLS and 8.04 SLS.

However, the last installation, using kernel image 2.6.24.-23-386 will not boot succesfully and stops on "waiting for root disks" and landing on the initramfs shell.

The problem is, although the ide-generic modules are present, they are not loaded.

This machine is a old (1998) Toshiba laptop 320CDS.
uname -a: Linux machinename 2.6.24-23-386 #1 Sun Jan 25 23:32:00 UTC 2009 i586 GNU/Linux
cat /proc/version_signature: Ubuntu 2.6.24-23.48-386

I can resume booting executing on the shell:
modprobe ide-generic

Hi Gerardo,

Can you test the even more recent Intrepid Ibex 8.10 release and confirm if this issue remains? Additionally, there is an even newer pre-release of Jaunty 9.04 (currently Alpha3) - http://cdimage.ubuntu.com/releases/jaunty/ . It contains a newer 2.6.28 based kernel. Please let us know your results. Thanks.

Hi,

Will check.

On travel until 9th feb.

Will try base and alternate then.

The 8.10 cd did not boot but I did not tried with full log (noquiet verbose
settings in the kernel boot).

Checking the depmode.d directory, the only mention of ide devices is for
block devices by number.
As the root device is specified by UUID doesn't this mean no effort will be
made to load generic-ide by default?

Atenciosamente,
Gerardo V. Lisboa

Hi,

I can confirm this bug in Ubuntu 8.04 LTS on a Toshiba Satellite 300CDS. I had the same behaviour described above: the boot process for kernel image 2.6.24.-23-386 drops into an initramfs shell because the root partition can't be mounted. This initramfs shell is missing all hdd devices such as /dev/hdax or /dev/sdax.

After reading this bug, I could fix the problem by:

1) Adding "ide-generic" and "ide-disk" to /etc/modules

2) Adding ""ide-generic" and "ide-disk" to /etc/initramfs-tools/modules

3) Regenerating the initramfs image by using the commands:
            update-initramfs -d -k 2.6.24-23-generic
            update-initramfs -c -k 2.6.24-23-generic
(it may be more correct to use the "-u" option but I wanted to be sure that the old image was really gone.)

4) Reboot

Hello,

Although I had not written, those were exactly the steps I made to fix the problem.

I am now testing the latest 9.04 beta to see if it already works.

From what I read, the Toshiba IDE controller is somewhat specific so some applications do not capture the correct ide settings, including drive geometry.

Later on the day I'll post my findings on this beta.

Findings from 9.04:

Beta 1 boots with acpi=force (no DMI BIOS year) - no other option needed (but this option is not available on the 'F6' list).

X installer does not run (detects the C&T 65555 chip but fails on "No devices found" - it warns it is not finding the keyboard and mouse either)
