No Audio/Sound In Ubuntu 8.10

Bug Description

Ubuntu 8.10
                - the Intrepid Ibex - released in October 2008.
alsa-base 1.0.17dfsg-2ubuntu1
alsa-oss 1.0.15-1
alsa-util 1.0.17-0ubuntu3
gnome-alsamixer 0.9.7
gstreamer 0.10-alsa
pulseaudio 0.9.10-2ubuntu9.1

Computer: Dell Studio Desktop SMT-111b (BestBuy). Purchased 12/20/2008.
Sound Card: Realtek ALC888S
Speakers: USB Powered Dell Speakers with green audio cable connected to soundcard.
OS: Dual Boot Vista Home Edition / Ubuntu 8.10

Problem: There are no system sounds or sounds from internet content like Youtube.com. CD's will not play audio. DVD's will play video but no audio. I have read and tried at least ten different "solutions" from the Ubuntu Forum but none of them seem to work. I do have system sounds and internet sounds if I use Vista so I know that the hardware is working correctly. This seems to be a Linux issue.

Coding aplay -l yields:

Thanks for reporting this and helping make Ubuntu better.... I have a couple of questions if you don't mind. Are you running 32-bit or 64-bit Ubuntu?
You said that System Sounds work, what about when you launch a game like chromium? (this is not a gnome default game you will need to install it: sudo apt-get install chromium chromium-data)
Have you tried the other devices that are present by opening gnome-volume control and dropping the box down to other discovered devices?

If you run: alsamixer -Dhw is the PCM set at a reasonable level.

Have you also enabled all of the switches in gnome-volume-control and checked their volume levels?

Thanks for your time,

Chris Crisafulli

Daniel,

I would be happy to run this script for you but I do not understand how to
setup a script. I clicked on the link and it took me to a website that
seems to have the source code of the script but I do not know how to
implement that code. I'm your typical linux noob so a little direction
would be helpful.

Thank you.

Chris,

I'm running the 32 Bit version of Ubuntu 8.10.

**** "You said that System Sounds work..."* - I may not have communicated
clearly in my last e-mail. I do NOT have system sounds nor sounds from
other applications. I installed "Chromium" which had no sound. Not even a
beep. The volume settings within the game were set to default levels. The
video for the game was very choppy (something else for me to investigate
later).

I've attached a screen shot of Chromium.

**** "Have you tried the other devices that are present by opening
gnome-volume control and dropping the box down to other discovered devices?"
* - Yes. I have tried combinations of all the devices but there are so
many that I really do not understand what I'm looking at. For example,
there is System>Preferences>Sounds which gives some options for controlling
volumes and then there is the "Volume Control's Preferences" (RMB on speaker
icon, select "Preferences") that also has its own volume controls. I've
attached a screen shot named "Volume-Controls.png" of both of these windows
open. As a noob user I find these multiple settings most confusing.

Also, from within the Volume Control window, there is a list of all the
other devices available on my machine. I have also attached a screen shot
named "Volume Controls Options.png" showing these devices. This too is
confusing to me because I only have one soundcard on my machine (right?).
Why then do all these different devices show up and which one is the one I
should be using?

**** "If you run: alsamixer -Dhw is the PCM set at a reasonable level."* -
Yes. The levels are maxed out. See the attached image, "alsamixer
-Dhw.png".

I am happy to help and debug this with you. Please let me know if I can do
anything else.

Best Regards,

Mike

So is this an official bug now? A new bug?

What do I do now? Will I get updated when the bug gets fixed? Do I need to
help work on the bug? Sorry for all the questions but I've never done this
before.

Thanks!

Mike

If really many people have exactly this bug, then a developer paid by Ubuntu will probably look at it, but this seems not to be the case here.

My main concern is that flash 10 exclusively supports Pulse, so until we can get a permanent fix, flash will be audio-less.

The codec for my chipset is listed as: Realtek ALC888

I just finished installing and completely updating Kubuntu and Ubuntu minutes before adding this comment. Running the latest version of HAL under 2.6.27-9-generic.

Mike, you have three soundcards according to the alsa-info script output.

The first one (card 0), ALC888, has two outputs, one analog and one digital.
Second (card 1) is that your USB speakers seem to have its own soundcard output.
Third is audio output over HDMI (card 2).

You can try to output sound to a specific card by trying the following commands:

# analog ALC888
aplay -D plughw:0 /usr/share/sounds/question.wav
# digital ALC888
aplay -D plughw:0,1 /usr/share/sounds/question.wav
# USB speakers
aplay -D plughw:1 /usr/share/sounds/question.wav
# HDMI
aplay -D plughw:2 /usr/share/sounds/question.wav

(Replace /usr/share/sounds/question.wav with another wave file if you don't have it.)

You have the same chipset as I do and so far, nothing I have tried seems to
work. I have neither system sounds nor sounds from mp3, .wav, or other
sound formats. I have tried OSS but that did not work either.

Any idea what this means?

Could everybody who has non-working audio hardware in this thread run http://www.alsa-project.org/alsa-info.sh and post back with the URL given to you? If you have done this already and posted it in
this bug, you don't have to do this again.

Secondly, for those of you who have an ALC888 sound card, please read /usr/share/doc/alsa-base/driver/ALSA-Configuration.txt.gz, and have a look under the ALC883/888 section. There you will find
module parameters that could possibly help you make your sound hardware work. I suggest experimenting with the options that most suit what inputs/outputs your hardware has, this includes digital
in/out. TO experiment with these options, do the following:

* Open up /etc/modprobe.d/alsa-base in an editor (you will need to use sudo)
* Add a line similar to the following to the end of the file:
options snd_hda_intel model=3stack-dig
where 3stack-dig is a possible option listed in the above referenced file. Note if you have a laptop manufactured by one of the vendors in the options list, I suggest you try those options first.

* Save the file, and exit the editor.
* Open a terminal, and run the following command:
depmod -ae
* Exit the terminal, and reboot your system.

Continue to do this for all options you wish to try.

If you could all report back as to whether any of those options helped you get any sound output, that would be much appreciated.

Thanks

Mike, do you possibly have a way of testing the HDMI output on your system, i.e do you have a TV or other device to connect an HDMI cable from your computer to the TV etc so sound can be tested?

If so, could you please try the to play an audio file through it? You can do so as follows: Open a terminal, and run this command: "aplay -d plughw:HDMI /usr/share/sounds/question.wav"

Then let me know if you get any errors, or hear any sound output. I also suggest you try this without any options added to /etc/modprobe.d/alsa-base, as I suggested in my last post.

Thanks.

One final thing. Jaunty alpha 3 was released a week or so ago. If you could download the live CD for Jaunty http://cdimage.ubuntu.com/releases/jaunty, and report back as to whether sound works, that would also be appreciated, thanks.

Thank you for taking the time to report this bug and helping to make Ubuntu better. We are sorry that we do not always have the capacity to look at all reported bugs in a timely manner.
There have been many changes in Ubuntu since that time you reported the bug and your problem may have been fixed with some of the updates. It would help us a lot if you could test the current Ubuntu development version (10.04). If you can test it, and it is still an issue, we would appreciate if you could upload updated logs by running apport-collect 311471, and any other logs that are relevant for this particular issue.

I've since upgraded to 9.10 and all the audio issues I experienced seem to
be resolved. Case is closed as far as I am concerned. Keep up the good
work!
