Bug Description

When trying to suspend my Asus A7Jc laptop, the computer shuts down LAN, WLAN, hard drive etc. However the monitor is still on with a console cursor blinking, power led is still on (i.e. not blinking as in successful suspend) and the fans go very fast as in 100% cpu utilization. At this state, I am forced to shut it off by pressing the power button for 5 seconds.

This happens everytime with Kicker -> Shutdown -> Suspend or running the command pm-suspend. I have tried booting with init=/bin/bash, but it's the same.

Also, Windows XP have problems with suspend when I use an ATK driver (can't remember the name, but it handles ACPI) from Windows Update. In Windows, the suspend failure here results sometimes in a BSOD or just a freeze similar to the one mentioned above. The ATK driver from ASUS works just fine.

Ok. ubuntu-bug added much but I guess you want some extra info (as per DebuggingACPI, wiki)

I confirm this bug. Same symptoms on my ASUS A7J.
I spent a huge amount of time trying hard to dig and solve this problem.
Suspend to ram did not worked neither on 7.10, 8.04 and 8.10 nor on some other linux distributions such as Mandriva and Fedora.

Care to test and confirm if this issue remains with the most recent pre-release of Jaunty 9.04 (currently Alpha4) - http://cdimage.ubuntu.com/releases/jaunty/ . It contains a newer 2.6.28 based kernel. You should be able to test suspend via a LiveCD. Please let us know your results. Thanks.

I can confirm it still freezes on the same hardware with Jaunty alpha3. I didn't try with alpha4.

Any clues/updates on this?
Running Jaunty with kernel 2.6.28-11-generic now. Problem persists.

Got the same bug on Toshiba Satellite L40-17R with current Jaunty.
Also, sudo /etc/acpi/sleep.sh works for me - that is, laptop to sleep and resumes correctly. Does it work for you?

On my ASUS A7J with Jaunty, sudo /etc/acpi/sleep.sh does nothing
visible at all...

Åke,
Due to the time since the last update on this issue, can you confirm this issue exists with the most recent Karmic Koala 9.10 Alpha release? ISO CD images are available at http://cdimage.ubuntu.com/releases/karmic/ . If the issue remains with Karmic it would be great to then also test the latest upstream mainline kernel available. This will allow additional upstream developers to examine this issue. Refer to https://wiki.ubuntu.com/KernelMainlineBuilds .

Thanks in advance.

Yes, I did.
Nothing work: neither suspend (everything seems to go down - Bluetooth, screen,... - but the computer never actually suspend, and I must turn it off the hard way) or hibernate...

Well actually, hibernate halfs work.
I get the following error msg (seemed linked to bluetooth), that prevent the computer to turn off:
btusb_intr_complete: hci 0 urb ebf9ce00 failed to resubmit (1)

But at the next start, the computer has able to restore my session, as expected from an hibernation

I think that this bug cannot be resolved until ASUS opens its information
about ACPI implementation particularity in this laptop model or
disassembling windows ATK driver code. IMHO there is a hardware or BIOS bug
and ATK driver mitigates it but only in Windows. The only thing to do is to
ask ASUS engineers about this bug and make an analog of ATK driver for Linux
or reverse engineering. (Un)fortunately I am now using another notebook
without any problems with hibernation or suspending in Linux, but an old pal
is in ьн range. So I can test any possible solutions of this bug.
