Bug Description

Strange errors appear in dmesg after inserting a blank cd:

Buffer I/O error on device sr1, logical block 0
this message is repeated several times.

I can't burn anything with the drive on either Intrepid comptuer I have tried this on (lenovo 3000 n100 laptop, attachments created here), or a Fujitsu-Siemens C610 desktop. Brasero, CD/DVD Creator, Gnome-Baker all fail.

I have tried this on all kernels available for intrepid, currently 2.6.27-10-generic ->
It used to work fine in previous versions of Ubuntu (starting with Gutsy)

The DVD drive is not defective (tested in Other OSs and works [gutsy, windows]), also it can read from disks without any difficulty in Intrepid.

Note that this is a usb device.

I tried to burn with Nero Linux 3.5 and oddly it works, so this probably isn't a kernel bug after all but rather something to do with a common backend to both Brasero and GnomeBaker which Nero apparently doesn't use... any idea who this bug should be assigned to?

Hi Peter,

This bug was reported a while ago and there hasn't been any activity in it recently. We were wondering if this is still an issue? Can you try with the latest development release of Ubuntu? ISO CD images are available from http://cdimage.ubuntu.com/releases/karmic .

If it remains an issue, could you run the following command from a Terminal (Applications->Accessories->Terminal). It will automatically gather and attach updated debug information to this report.

apport-collect -p linux 304434

Also, if you could test the latest upstream kernel available that would be great. It will allow additional upstream developers to examine the issue. Refer to https://wiki.ubuntu.com/KernelMainlineBuilds . Once you've tested the upstream kernel, please remove the 'needs-upstream-testing' tag. This can be done by clicking on the yellow pencil icon next to the tag located at the bottom of the bug description and deleting the 'needs-upstream-testing' text. Please let us know your results.

Thanks in advance.

Using the latest development release of Karmic, I was able to burn a CD image, however dmesg is still being spammed by errors similar to:
[ 2621.396728] Buffer I/O error on device sr0, logical block 8

Thanks for the update Peter. I'm going to mark this particular issue as Fix Released. It would probably be best to open a separate bug for the messages you see being printed. Thanks!
