usb creator upgrading breaks: initramfs disabled, but anyway tries to create links

Bug Description

installing 8.10 intrepid from the official iso on an usb stick can be made unusable by upgrading.

1. run the update-manager
2. press "check"
3. press "install"
4. it fails when installing the linux kernel

update-initramfs is disabled since running on a live CD

maybe linux is the better package for this, as the "post-installation" script of linux-image-2.6.27-7-generic tries to do that.

btw, after the above error, a core dump follows.
