Bug Description

This is a really difficult bug for me to track down, however, it was NOT present in Ubuntu Hardy Heron (Ubuntu 8.04), it has only appeared since I upgraded to Ubuntu Intrepid Ibex (Ubuntu 8.10).

Steps to reproduce:

1. Close laptop lid
2. Watch machine try to suspend
3. Watch machine go back to the desktop

There is no notification that the suspend failed and this failure leads to my battery dying and possibly overheating.

I've attached what I could get out of dmesg -- unfortunately, it dumps so much data that the log gets truncated.

My laptop (HP530) will not suspend at all when the lid is closed. If I close Suspend from the shutdown menu, it works perfectly and will resume when I open the lid and push Power (this laptop cannot resume simply by opening the lid) but closing the lid does nothing.

This only started after I installed Ibex. It all worked perfectly in Hardy.

Please tell me what to post to assist and I'll do so.

Hi Patrick,

Care to test and confirm if this issue remains with the most recent pre-release of Jaunty 9.04 (currently Alpha4) - http://cdimage.ubuntu.com/releases/jaunty/ . It contains a newer 2.6.28 based kernel. You should be able to test suspend via a LiveCD. Please let us know your results.

@Adriweb, for the time being can you open a separate bug report? https://wiki.ubuntu.com/KernelTeamBugPolicies . Even though you may be experiencing the same symptom reported here it really is hardware specific. We can easily mark bugs as duplicates later on if necessary. Thanks.

Unfortunately, that laptop (IBM t43p) has since died and I've switched laptops to a machine that has no problems suspending (IBM t60p). I no longer am able to test under the same hardware that exhibited the problem.

Thanks for the note Patrick. I'm going to go ahead and close this bug out since you no longer have the hardware. Thanks.
