Bug Description

My system is Ubuntu 8.10 with kernel 2.6.27-7-generic. Since I installed Ubuntu 8.10 sound is not working. My Chipset is VIA 8237 and the correct module is loaded (snd-via82xx). I even reinstalled the module and killed the pulseaudio process.
I also tried every step on the following website:
http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=205449
Nothing mentioned above worked to fix the problem.

Thanks for help.

Kind regards

Konstantin Wolff

Can you post (as a file attachement to this bug) the output of each following command:

cat /proc/asound/cards

I can confirm this for a Biostar U8668-D on Ubuntu 8.10.

Same V8237 audio chipset. No sound at all. I can't say if it worked in other Ubuntu version.

Hi itsme,

This bug was reported a while ago and there hasn't been any activity in it recently. We were wondering if this is still an issue? Can you try with the latest development release of Ubuntu? ISO CD images are available from http://cdimage.ubuntu.com/releases/karmic .

If it remains an issue, could you run the following command from a Terminal (Applications->Accessories->Terminal). It will automatically gather and attach updated debug information to this report.

apport-collect -p linux 297744

Also, if you could test the latest upstream kernel available that would be great. It will allow additional upstream developers to examine the issue. Refer to https://wiki.ubuntu.com/KernelMainlineBuilds . Once you've tested the upstream kernel, please remove the 'needs-upstream-testing' tag. This can be done by clicking on the yellow pencil icon next to the tag located at the bottom of the bug description and deleting the 'needs-upstream-testing' text. Please let us know your results.

Thanks in advance.

I had the same problem and solved it by adding the following line in my /etc/modules.conf:

options snd-via82xx dxs_support=2

Then, of course, `modprobe -r snd-via82xx` and `modprobe snd-via82xx` to reload module

I've had the same issue going back to 8.10, though the versions have gotten better at detecting the hardware, just not producing any audio.

VIA 8237
xubuntu 9.10 karmic, ubuntu 9.04, xubuntu 8.10

apport-collect forthcoming ... then I'm going to try Bas' fix above.

I have an ASUS K8V-MX motherboard, which had never been used to play sounds previously (was previously a headless development box). Recently re-purposed it, and installed MythBuntu 10.04, and could not sound to work at all, using the onboard VIA 8237, with the snd_via82xx module (this was using ALSA though, not pulseaudio). Had tried everything in software (mixers, checked modules, etc), and had begun to conclude it was this bug. But after many hours finally saw this post: http://ubuntu-virginia.ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=919634&page=2 , and added a jumper to pins 5-6 and 9-10 on the motherboard's FP_AUDIO block. Then after undoing some of the software changes I had made, sound "just worked". So, this hardware seems to be fully capable of sound in Linux, just make sure that it's not a hardware problem - by either using the front audio connectors, or have the 2 jumpers on the motherboard's FP_AUDIO block if you want to use the rear connectors.

This is now solved for me with 10.04.

Using 10.04 live CD on the laptop I was having this issue with, I can get sound by switching the "Connector" in the "Output" section of sound preferences to "Analog Output / No Amplifier".

Thanks!
