I can verify this as well. Same SATA DVD Writer - SH-S203N will NOT boot live cd. I disconnect it and installed intrepid with an external usb dvd drive I have. After installation I upgraded using apt-get dist-upgrade / apt-get upgrade, etc. after a few reboots I reconnected sata dvd writer and intrepid hung for a long time at boot and gave same error messages as before. Latest kernel as of 12-02-08 provided by apt-get did not fix issue. Same machine installs 8.04 w/o issue and runs latest updates as well without issue.

I think i have this issue too.

Screen shots of Mandrevia 2009 trying to boot in this post http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=1026339

I have a SATA HDD and DVD Writer. IDE disabled in bios.

My DVD combo drive is Pioneer DVR-215BK.
8.10 will only boot if this drive is disconnected. It will boot as soon as I pull the sata lead out of the drive(before initramfs prompt). Drive repeats those sounds it makes when you first put a disk in, a good few times.

lspci from ubuntu 8.04.

Wido, in your initial bug description you said that archlinux did not work for you.
Which kernel version are you running now?

Also, d2globalinc and oliver, if you upgrade to the latest kernel version, can you then enable/connect the sata dvdr and boot?

Thank you

ok, so this tells us the issue has been fixed in 2.6.28. thank you, wido, and good luck with archlinux

this leads me to assume that the issue will not appear in jaunty live cds. can someone test this?

I'm using 64bit version - I'm still back on Hardy but just got done making a custom LiveDVD using intrepid 64bit, kernel version is 2.6.27-11. I'm going to attempt to boot from the disk to see if the issue is still there. Will post my results w/ kernel versions, etc.

bad news - Both the custom liveDVD I rolled with Intrepid 64bit Kernel version 2.6.27-11 and the latest Alpha3 of Jaunty 64bit did not work. Both came up with same error.

ata3: SRST failed (errno=-16)

I used the Jaunty Desktop 64bit LiveCD and received the same error. So the bug is still there in the latest Alpha.

Everything still works fine with Hardy - now using 64bit kernel - 2.6.24-23-generic #1 SMP Mon Jan 26 01:04:16 UTC 2009 x86_64 GNU/Linux

Let me know if I can help with testing anything else!

Thanks,

Was able to boot LiveDVD w/ Intrepid 8.10 (didn't try jaunty but assume the same) - with adding all_generic_ide to the end of the kernel boot line.. This is not a solution, but allowed me to boot the CD. I will not be installing a workstation with this feature since it would degrade harddrive performance, but perhaps it will help solve the issue knowing this. Let me know if there is anything else I can do to help resolve this issue.

Thanks!
