Re-assigning to the kernel for reason in comment above. I notice you've tried to upgrade the kernel on a live CD. What seems to have happened is that update-initramfs doesn't run (because you're on a live CD), and then it fails to create the sym-link to the initrd (because it hasn't been created yet)

Actually it was a thumb drive i tried to update, but it appears that a thumb drive works just like a live cd. Perhaps there should be a note (somewhere) that linux on a thumbdrive should be treated like a live cd installation.
