Bug Description

In yesterday update on my hardy laptop with 2.6.24-21.42 (using 2.6.24-21-generic) the wireless network stopped working. With 2.6.24-19-generic it has always worked, and after booting up with kernel 2.6.24-19-generic it is working again. The driver is rtl8187. After trying to connect to the wireless network, network-manager is leaving me to insert the passkey again, but it can't connect. All this with kernel 2.6.24-21-generic. It's a clear regression in the current kernel. What can i do?

System Ubuntu hardy 8.04.1 with kernel 2.6.24-21-generic
Intel Celeron M 1.73 Mhz
Internal usb wifi card (driver rtl8187)

No the update was for ubuntu 8.10. I'm on Ubuntu Hardy 8.04. There is no linux-firmware package for hardy. Why has my wireless stopped working when updating from 2.6.24-19 to 2.6.24-21! Needs an answer.

Ok, i solved it with blacklisting the r8187 module. Which is starting instead of rtl8187. When i did that the rtl8187 module loads without problem.

Hi! I confirm this bug. I use Hardy Heron amd64 version on my laptop and after a fresh install I updated the system and ended up with a broken WiFi connection. I could see the hotspot but I was constantly asked for the shared key. I tried using an external WiFi dongle and that worked. Everything started to work as normal after I rebooted into the earlier version of the kernel. I tried the suggestion made above of blacklisting the r8187 module and that fixed the issue in the new kernel also. I also grepped for the r8187 module and discovered that it was included into the new 2.6.24-22 kernel only. I couldn't find it among the modules of the old 2.6.24-19 kernel.

Unfortunately it seems this bug is still an issue. Can you confirm this issue exists with the most recent Jaunty Jackalope 9.04 release - http://www.ubuntu.com/news/ubuntu-9.04-desktop . In particular, please indicate if the correct, working driver is found. Please let us know your results. Thanks.
