Bug Description

I upgraded to linux-image-2.6.27-7-generic (2.6.27-7.10) a few days ago and today I noticed that I still had the previous 4-ish kernel packages installed. After purging them and restarting the machine, it refused to boot with the following error message:

> [something about CPIO, sorry can't remember precisely]
> Kernel panic: VFS: Unable to mount root fs on unknown-block(0,0)

I'm not sure what happened to /boot/initrd.img-2.6.27-7-generic file, but I assume it was there and either zero-length or corrupt. The grub entry for last-good-boot was not present any more (and the initrd for it was missing).

So the only way I could fix this was to boot from a rescue cd and re-run update-initramfs manually.

Hi Mike,

This bug was reported quite some time ago and hasn't had any updates. Have you ran into this issue with any of the newer Jaunty or Karmic Alpha kernels I was unable to reproduce the issue here when attempting to purge an older 2.6.31-2 kernel.
