It seems to be somehow related to the kernel, as Takashi Iwai asked Linus to "please pull yet another ALSA updates for 2.6.28 from:

I'm having the same problem on ASUS X71A notebook (Ubuntu 8.10 kernel 2.6.27-7-generic, Intel Pentium T3200 (core duo) )

System->Preferences->Sound->Sound playback: HDA Intel ALC622 Analog (ALSA) -> Test
shows the folloing error message: "audiotestsrc wave=sine freq=512 ! audioconvert ! audioresample ! gconfaudiosink: Could not open audio device for playback."

No mixers are muted, yet no sound.

Completely the same problem (=> villofish), and same laptop :)
HP 6735s Ubuntu 8.10 i386

Completely same infos:
$ lspci | grep Audio
00:14.2 Audio device: ATI Technologies Inc SBx00 Azalia (Intel HDA)
and so on and on.

The sound works perfectly on 8.04 (but there are problems with the processor [AMD Athlon(tm)X2 DualCore QL-60])

I tried:

- recompile the latest alsa-driver ... (beep works, no mixer, and no loaded kernel module [snd_hda_intel])
- copy module files from 8.04 (at the moment i've got two ubuntus on my laptop: 8.04 and 8.10) (beep works, nothing else)
- install the previous alsa-driver; has the same (beep works, but nothing else)
- set so many option in /etc/modprobe.d/alsa-base - doesn't work

OFF, but it is also a bug: wireless(802.11)...8.10 dont know anything about my wireless...lspci does not list this device. Bluetooth works very well, but nothing about "wifi"...chipset: Broadcom 4322 (a/b/g/draft-n 2.0)

Hi, I have HP dv4-1120. In kernel 2.6.27-7-generic i'm using parameter ircpoll and sound works.

After upgrade kernel to Ubuntu 8.10, kernel 2.6.27-9-generic I lost sound and irqpoll does not working. pci=noacpi does not working too

The "model=laptop" option did not work for me.

After an upgrade to Jaunty Alpha 2 (kernel 2.6.28-3-generic) the sound works. However I would not recommend this update on a production machine since bugs like #310345 (freezing GUI) are worse than no sound.
