I have this problem with Ubuntu Intrepid also (Linux owl 2.6.27-6-generic #1 SMP Tue Oct 7 04:15:23 UTC 2008 x86_64 GNU/Linux). It seems like a solution[1] would be to add force=1 to the module parameters, but it looks like a ridiculous solution to me, so I'm not trying it.

My current results are:
[ 1023.862165] hdaps: inverting axis readings.
[ 1023.862180] hdaps: LENOVO ThinkPad T61 detected.
[ 1023.862187] hdaps: driver init failed (ret=-6)!

Hi,

I'm having the same problem with Intrepid on my ThinkPad R61:

$ dmesg | grep -i hdaps
[ 74.537569] hdaps: inverting axis readings.
[ 74.537572] hdaps: LENOVO ThinkPad R61 detected.
[ 74.537575] hdaps: driver init failed (ret=-6)!

Did anyone get it working?

By the way, trying to set force=1 yields

[ 1368.935764] hdaps: Unknown parameter `force'

from thinkwiki:
There are two versions of the hdaps driver, one in the Linux kernel mainline, and another provided by tp_smapi. Use of the tp_smapi version of hdaps is strongly recommended by the current hdaps developers.

i'm not sure, but does this maybe mean that tp_smapi.ko and hdaps.ko are mutually exclusive?

You should modprobe hdaps_ec, not hdaps.

But, after last kernel upgrade for Intrepid I get this error loading hdaps_ec:
FATAL: Module hdaps_ec not found.

Why is that? Somebody forgot to compile hdaps_ec in the kernel modules package?

Right. The module is missing for some time. The last time I could use hdaps_ec was with a hardy kernel AFAIK.

Same here on a X60s, hdaps won't load, hdaps_ec which loaded in Hardy is missing and tp_smapi loads but doesn't yield acceleration information. (At least neither I nor hdaps-gl can find them)
Maybe I'll file a bug that hdaps_ec is missing
