Bug Description

It does not work with the current kernel 2.6.27-3-generic #1 SMP Wed Sep 10 16:02:00 UTC 2008 i686 GNU/Linux

It appears similar to this bug:

But that bug is said to be resolved. This one is clearly not.

the problem seems to be with the mixer device. alsa can't access it somehow. sound output actually works, but i'm not hearing anything. i'm guessing the sound is muted, but with no mixer acces, i can't help that.

What I ended up with was using model=hp instead of model=dallas. The internal speakers are almost uselessly quiet (I don't recall if they were louder before (i.e. with 8.04.1) or not, it's not my computer). But the headphones work fine. This machine might just have quiet speakers 8-)
This machine has a RS480 primary chipset, which uses the SB400 for most of the goods (including IXP SB4X0 audio.)

It should be born in mind that sound problems of this nature, where adding a model=<something> helps sort out your machine, are almost always very specific to the machine in question. If you find the model quirk which is required for your system you are best filing a bug specifically for that machine. Mention the machine it applies to in the title, and include the lspci -vvnn output and the alsa info for the machine in that new bug.

This bug is likely to be interpreted as only applying to the submitters hardware and marked fixed when _their_ hardware works.

Hello Andy,

I am from Holland and are not familiar with the term "model quirk".
Can you explain? Then I will report a bug which will be specific for
my machine.
Should I report that bug within the Intrepid buglist or somewhere else?

:) A model quirk (literally an oddness) refers to marking a strange
difference in the driver configuration for a specific machine.
This can be requested via the the model=<something> options in
/etc/modprobe.d/alsa-base. If you have found a model= option which sorts
out your machine then that is something worth reporting in a machine
specific bug, with the lspci -vvnn output. As the kernel can be enhanced
to include auto-detection of your machine type so that the option is no
longer needed.

I confirm this bug while trying to fix my girlfriend's computer.
Just after upgrading to Intrepid sound stops working on Toshiba Satellite L35-S2174. Not so surprisingly, I don't have pleasant experiences on installing Linux systems on Toshiba laptops.

Adding 'model=hp' to '/etc/modprobe.d/alsa-base' just give us sound from the headphones. That's not bad at all once they wasn't working before this update. I've never tried to find out the reason for previous problems either. Well. Just hope that next releases come to fix this problem. I don't want her to keep carrying this laptop and the speakers as well.

Thanks for the nice job on Ubuntu.

@Vinicius Massuchetto -- have you tried all of the model quirks available for your codec? You can find out which codec you have with aplay -l. For example mine looks like this:

**** List of PLAYBACK Hardware Devices ****
card 0: Intel [HDA Intel], device 0: STAC92xx Analog [STAC92xx Analog]
      Subdevices: 1/1
      Subdevice #0: subdevice #0

So I have a STAC92xx codec. Looking in Documentation/sound/alsa/ALSA-Configuration.txt there is a list of possible model quirks and which laptops they are meant for. It is recommended you try each and see if any help (remembering to reboot after changing).

This is a Acer Ferrari 5000 laptop.

Why does Ubuntu have so many regressions? It seems like every time a new version comes out something that used to work gets broken. I think the quality of Ubuntu is starting to suffer. I never saw this problem on Mandrake back in the day. With Intrepid Atheros wireless on another laptop quit working and now this sb4x0 issue on this laptop.

Hello Andy,

I do not have a model entry in my /etc/modprobe.d/alsa-base and cannot
adjust this to my computer. Can I just add a line model=<type> to my
alsa-base config file?

You should be able to add a new line at the bottom similar to the one
below:

    options snd-hda-intel model=<type>

Ok, so my issue is resolved. When trying to give my sound a try last night I managed to fix it. By adding the line options snd-hda-intel model=acer to /etc/modprobe.d/alsa-base and restarted. Then I had to give myself rights to use audio in the Users and Groups configuration utility.
