Acer Aspire 5520 cannot record sound with HDA-Intel NVidia Codec ALC268

When recording sound with my Acer Aspire 5520, I get lots of crackles and noises (see included samples).

A microphone plugged on microphone jack worked fine with kernel 2.6.24-19 but it stopped working with kernel 2.6.24-21 (getting crackles now).

The internal microphone that comes with the Crystal Eye webcam does not work with either kernel.

For no apparent reason, the mic now appears to be working, it crackles a lot though, as can be heard in the included sample, which makes it still unusable.

Also, have tested Intrepid alpha-6 Live CD and it cannot record a thing from the internal mic .

Just to be safe, I double checked and it works 100% fine with Vista, so it's NOT an hardware issue.

As written above with Ibex is even worse.

I tested Intepid Ibex alpha-6 with following results:

1. If I record using "Mic Boost" or "Internal Mic Boos", I've no sound at all.

2. If I record using "Capture" I get only cracks, as you can hear in the included sample.

I checked volume settings before recording so it should not be a mute problem.

Also, the microphone works well under Vista.

Just as a side note, Skype is not working any longer on my laptop complaining about issues with sound playback, it was working fine before I upgraded the kernel, so I fear something is bad with 2.6.24-21-generic and sound.

Since this is a production machine and it's meant to run LTS distros, I can do it in two cases:

1) There is a Live CD with the version you want me to try or there is a procedure to start a Live CD, set up drivers for testing and then revert back to my clean 8.04

2) There is a .deb with latest drivers i an install with Synaptic over my 8.04 and eventually uninstall if they causes troubles.

I'm not confident enough with building drivers from scratch and installing them.

Please let me know if I can help, and point me to the corresponding documentation/procedures....

I installed Ubuntu 8.10 (kernel 2.6.27-7) on my HP dv6910 laptop recently. My external mic port is working fine but the inbuilt mic doesnt work. My card: HDA Nvidia, Chip: Conexant CX20561 (Hermosa).
I am sure it is not a hardware problem. I will be glad to give additional information if required.

I tried the live CD for 8.10 AMD64 and Linux Ubuntu 2.6.27-7-generic kernel.

I could not really complete the test, since Sound Recorder hangs when I press the "Stop" button.

I have an hp pavillion dv5-1120us, and cannot record sound using my internal mic. I have a fresh install of Ubuntu 8.10 x64, kernel 2.6.27-9-generic. I have tried all of the audio settings in both sound recorder and audacity, without success. I also tried installing and uninstalling pulseaudio and alsa packages, without success. Open up the Synaptic Package Manager and install ubuntustudio-audio and ubuntustudio-audio plugins. Next, open up QAMix, go to Capture TAB and set it to MIC.

I am still working on the USB items. See if you can help me figure out how to compile USB items in Ubuntu.

If you find out, then press alt + F2, type usbview to see all the USB item.

I've tried installing ubuntustudio-audio plug-ins, but no dice.

What's boggling me is that when I opened up the QAMix and went to the CAPTURE tab, I couldn't see how to set it to MIC. No options. Please see attached.

Oh by the way, I was trying to use SKYPE but the other party could not hear me. The mic works fine when I was using Vista so it's not a hardware problem. :D

Michael, the ubuntustudio-plugins was a suggestion made by a reporter that sadly didn't help in the issue at hand and the problems caused by those plugins are not related to this bug at all.

Also the bug is related to Acer laptops, HDA-Nvidia and ALC268 codec. (maybe it can affect the HDA-Intel but not sure at this time)

digging around a bit i've found an upstream commit maybe related with this issue.

Hmm, looking at the date is possible that it hasn't made it into upstream yet..

but you can try with jaunty alpha5 (it uses 2.6.28 )

and the following options at alsa-base

acer Acer laptops
acer-dmic Acer laptops with digital-mic [this is the new one]
acer-aspire Acer Aspire One

so at the end of /etc/modprobe.d/alsa-base you'll add a line with

options snd-hda-intel model=*oneoftheprevious3*

It'll be targeted at Karmic, and then we'll ask you to test Karmic, and then
you'll want to wait until release and it won't be fixed there either and on and
on (yes, this a common occurrence...why do you think Ubuntu releases with so
many bugs? we don't hear about them until a week before release).

Friends, I really do appreciate all you do and all that you
give of yourselves to Ubuntu, Linux, and free software.

However, that said this is what frustrates users and causes
them not to bother submitting bug reports. This seems like
trial and error attempts at bug fixing and what the users
would like is for the piece of code that is causing the problem
to be identified and fixed instead of this try this kernel and
see if the problem persists. It is as if that no one seems to
know what changed in the new kernel that might have an
impact on the problem.

Please, pleases don't get me wrong. I really do appreciate all
who are looking into to this. Thank you. On many bug reports
it will take weeks and weeks just to get anyone to read them
and respond.

I tried the jaunty alpha5 live cd - with no success. I was, however, unable to try the
suggested alsa options, as I was not able to reload the module as specified
by Mackenzie Morgan (got the message: FATAL: Module snd_hda_intel is in use.).

Adding ubuntu-studio and -plugins (under 8.04) causes a set of programs and libraries to be installed, these seem to depend on a special version of the kernel which is also installed, overwriting the current settings. Anyway, I'll pay more attention next time.

1) I need detailed info on what to do for the test, otherwise all I can do is start the CD and see if the mic automagically works, this is hardly the case since most "alpha" or "beta" CDs are not even able to correctly boot on my laptop, not to mention loading all the proper drivers. I saw you now listed a couple commands to type, I'll be glad to try them as soon as I get a chance.

2) As I wrote before I'm using Hardy Heron that is a LTS, I'd expect the issue to be fixed on that version of the OS, without the need to update until the next LTS. Not sure if this will be the case.

Hi, thanks for testing..

the problem you're facing is caused by applications using the sound. So we need to kill those while on the LiveCD in order to test.

1.- be sure none sound application is running
2.- kill pulse audio. From a terminal sudo killall -9 pulseaudio
3.- kill mixer applet:

this would need some commands but is doable.
 - sudo ps ax | grep mixer
 - you'll get a warning about reloading mixer applet.. don't close the window until you remove the module

4.- sudo rmmod -r snd_hda_intel
5.- made the changes to alsa-base
6.- sudo modprobe snd_hda_intel
7.- reload volume applet

well.. it seems hard i know.. the other option is to install it directly at the machine and test more easily (reboots between changes).

I was finally able to test with Jaunty alpha 5 Linux ubuntu 2.6.28-8-generic #26-Ubuntu SMP Wed Feb 25 04:27:53 UTC 2009 x86_64 GNU/Linux, and with:

snd-hda-intel model=acer-aspire

I was able to record sound. The issue is now that "Record from input:" option in Sound Recorder does not provide a way to use the internal mic (the one with Crystal Eye webcam), I only have "Mic Boost", "Capture" and "Digital". Recording sound from the mic jack now works though.

Note also that with:

snd-hda-intel model=acer
snd-hda-intel model=acer-dmic

I get nothing (mute) when recording.

So, a step forward but still not 100% there :-)

Yeah, there's a lot of guess & test involved. We don't necessarily know
everything that changed upstream, and sometimes there'll be a change for some
other piece of hardware that will still affect your hardware, and that adds
more ambiguity.

should get rid of that "FATAL" error.

If it's a simple enough change, backporting the fix is possible. If it's
not...well, all bugs are considered as affecting the current development
release unless a task exists specifically for another version. I can open a
Hardy task if you like, but it's not up to me on whether it'll end up being
approved or not.

I know a lot of internal mics are busted in Jaunty.

As for the jack, I just talked to a sound guy. He says that they'd have to add that entire quirk to Hardy because model=acer-aspire didn't exist back then. He said it might be possible to get it in linux-backports-modules. The person to talk to won't be online til tomorrow though, so I'll just make a note-to-self to ask.

What is the difference between a LTS and a regular version of Ubuntu if bugs are fixed only in the current release?

I've spoken with many people but I'm still very confused about how bug fix and package updates work....is there a link you can point me to that explains the whole process?

All bugs are considered as affecting the current development release. We don't
want to make big changes post-release because that can introduce
regressions...such as the one you've got here (that isn't, by the way, making
a whole lot of sense to me since Daniel Chen just looked through the logs of
what changed from -19 to -21 and this sound driver didn't change). LTS *just*
means the amount of time during which the software will be patched, say, for
security reasons. Bug fixes, when non-invasive enough to not introduce
regressions, happen as well. About 2 years ago "let's add support for newer
hardware partway through LTS" was introduced because having an LTS release
that's only good if your hardware's old...not so good. So, new drivers get
added, but old ones get the "if it ain't broke..." treatment. Make sense?

Anyway, like I said, Daniel (resident audio guru) says there wasn't a change
between those 2 kernels that's specific to your chip. He also wasn't active
during Hardy's development cycle, so he needs to go through and see what's in
there...maybe something changed elsewhere that's catching you. He wondered if
the kernel in Hardy proposed still has the problem, and said he'd dig into it.

The internal mic on my AAO 150 is still not working with an updated Jaunty 2.6.28-11 and snd-hda-intel model=acer-aspire.
When I try to record all I get is garbage. In sound recorder, "capture" is selected as input and running alsamixer from command line shows capture is on and volume all the way up.

My notebook is an Acer 5520-5912, with chipset nvidia mcp67, audio alc268. I've the same problem with my microphone, and any options (acer, acer-aspire, acer-dmid) that i tried in alsa-base have produced the same problem. When I record my microphone, depending of the volume bar, I have silence or much noise.

I have looking for informations in many places, and I think that the problem is with the kernel >2.6.25, because I founded the same problem with Debian Lenny, Ubuntu Intrepid, Ubuntu Jaunty, and I've learned in some forums that the same occurs with Gentoo, Mepis, etc. In debian Lenny my problem was solved when I "downgrade" to kernel 2.6.25. I've noticed too that in kernel until the version 2.6.25, in "input source" box I have the option "front mic", and for kernel>2.6.25 I have the option "Internal Mic".

I'm trying to help the community, and I hope that my informations can be useful.
Obs: Ubuntu Jaunty Beta is fantastic, I'm running him now!

I am using Acer Aspire 4520 laptop (I am using the Jaunty release - amd64, ext4). The inbuilt mic does not work, but external ones work. I wish this bug could fixed, cause everything else works so beautifully.

I fixed this problem on my Acer Aspire 5520 Notebook. I had the exact same problems above, but can now record audio just fine with the internal microphone from the Acer CrystalEye Camera and Microphone combo.

NOTE: This problem was experienced in Ubuntu 9.04 and Linux Mint 7. The fix was performed and tested in Linux Mint 7, which uses Ubuntu 9.04 as its base.

Step 1:
Download <a href="ftp://ftp.alsa-project.org/pub/driver/alsa-driver-1.0.20.tar.bz2">Alsa drivers v10.0.20</a>

Step 2:
extract the contents.

NOTE: I actually used a program called CheckInstall which creates a debian package that I can later install or remove at my leisure. If you choose this option be sure to install CheckInstall first, and also it may be necessary to install the finished package in this manner:

Step 4:
Configure alsa-base.conf

Sound recording should now work correctly on the Acer 5520. I experienced this problem with Ubuntu 9.04 and Linux Mint 7. The Fix works in Linux Mint 7, and should therefore work in Ubuntu 9.04, as they are essentially the same under the hood.

Indeed Mike, new alsa drivers worked a charm. I still haven't tried anything else, but sound + internal mic are working perfectly.
I have to turn the Internal Mic Boost almost all the way down because the recording is too noisy otherwise.

Hi, I have an Acer Aspire 4520, just yesterday I have installed Jaunty (at last), and I've tried the Mike's solution and it works!!! The in-built mic now works although the sound is some crash. Hi I know this is not a forum but can some please point me to the right place; The Mike has posted a fix but I can't seem to get to work I get stuck on "sudo dpkg -i --force-overwrite alsa-driver_1.0.20-1_i386.deb". I assume this is not the correct command as it has 1_i386.deb at the end and i am using 64 bit.

Any help would be appreciated google brings up dead forums so not much help or answers, this is the last thing i got to get working.

I tried your solution marcosbelancon on an Aspire 5520. It worked correctly with kernel version 2.6.28-11. After I updated ubuntu with update manager to kernel version 2.6.28-13, the result wasn't good. It was just garbage, as descussed above.
Thusar maybe your system is based on the 2.6.28-13 kernel?

in the first time, I used "my solution" running the kernel 2.6.28-11. After an update I found problems again, so I just did the same steps to solve the problem one time more. May be I am wrong, but I think that "my solution" just fix the problem of the current running kernel!

Same here. With latest kernel upgrade I had to reinstall the driver and it worked again after a reboot.

I've been struggling with this on my Acer 6530G for months now. I've tried every suggestion I can find, including the most recent one of updating ALSA to 1.0.20, but I still can't get my built-in mic to work. I ran the alsa-info.sh. This is the only part of Ubuntu that I cannot get working, and it's incredibly frustrating! Any other thoughts? Thanks!

Well, the procedure of <marcosbelacon> functions perfectly on my Ubuntu 9.04!
Finally my Acer Aspire 5315-2698, turned on the internal mic.

Finally I got it! The Ubuntu can record again

Detail:
I was using the Ubuntu 8.04 LTS before and the internal mic doesn't had any problem!
And now...
I'm using Ubuntu 9.04, with the latest updates.
The version of my kernel is <2.6.28-17-generic>.

I'm sorry for double posting. Can't see any edit button here :)

I can confirm that the solution from The Mike is working on 10.10 as well. Personally I had to adjust the volume to the lowest to avoid distorted sound. This may be because I have edited allot of config in my long virtual trip to fix my internal microphone!

If it has any meaning to solve this bug in a later version of Ubuntu, here are my output from the alsa script:
