Bug Description

I have an HP nw8249 laptop which has a button to enable/disable the builtin
wireless. When wireless is enabled, there are two blue lights turend on. One on
the button itself, and another next to the power, ac/battery, and disk activity
lights. Both lights work under Windows, but no under Linux. The button works to
enable/disable the wireless, it just doesn't light up when the wireless is enabled.

The light seems to be working now, I think it's because I started using
bluetooth, so now both devices have the same status at boot. When it wasn't
working I only had the wifi enabled.

the light still works in dapper, but I haven't tried it with one of the two devices disabled (need to boot windows to do that, and who wans to boot windows?)

I can confirm this issue with an HP dv1245ea. The wireless lights (one in the wireless radio button and one below the screen) never worked and still don't work. I can live without the light below the screen (it's annoying/distracting as hell) but it would be nice if the wireless radio button light did work. Unfortunately, the leds don't work separately so I haven't reported this earlier because, as I mentioned, I find the light below the screen very distracting.

It's possible to enable the leds by issuing the command (as root):
% echo 1 > /sys/bus/pci/drivers/ipw2200/0000\:02\:06.0/led

i have an hp dv1000 series with the same card ipw2200 in ubuntu feisty, and my light did not work until i tried the command in the comment of Celso (https://launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/acpi-support/+bug/26464/comments/3) i can confirm this bug still exists in feisty.

i've got a simple solution to this if you adds a text file (/etc/modprobe.d/ipw2200)

and puts in it the following:

options ipw2200 led=1

Which sends a command to turn the light on when the module is loaded and it works after this. Can this file be put there by default?? Someone please reply...

I create the text file named ipw2200 with the line options ipw2200 led=1 and it works perfectly for me!.

I can confirm that on my Acer Travelmate 4002WLMi with ipw2200, the led does not light under the Hardy beta. I have not tested the led=1 fix under Hardy, but it does work under Feisty.

I have an HP dv4000 notebook (about 3 years old now) and also had to add the '/etc/modprobe.d/ipw2200' file to make the LED work. This is after I just did a clean install of Hardy, so what do we need to do to get this turned on by default, and are there any reasons why it shouldn't be done?

I am testing the candidate images for Intrepid RC and can confirm this bug on Acer Aspire 1694wlmi that has the ipw2200
The /etc/modprobe.d/ipw2200 text file fixes it though...

I confirm that the LED isn't working after a clean install on a "ACER TravelMate 4002WLMi" ipw2200 WLAN.

Adding
options ipw2200 led=1
to
/etc/modprobe.d/options

fix the problem and show LED in full bright when connected to WLAN, intermittent on connecting to WLAN and off when manually turned off (by pressing on the button).

The code should be included by default, it's not a long fix and should solve a little problem for many of us with that WLAN.

Hi fangorious,

This bug was reported a while ago and there hasn't been any activity in it recently. We were wondering is this still an issue? Can you try with the latest development release of Ubuntu? (ISO CD images are available from http://cdimage.ubuntu.com/releases/)

If it remains an issue, could you run the following command from a Terminal (Applications->Accessories->Terminal). It will automatically gather and attach updated debug information to this report.

apport-collect -p linux-image-`uname -r` 26464

Also, if you could test the latest upstream kernel available that would be great. It will allow additional upstream developers to examine the issue. Refer to https://wiki.ubuntu.com/KernelMainlineBuilds . Once you've tested the upstream kernel, please remove the 'needs-upstream-testing' tag. This can be done by clicking on the yellow pencil icon next to the tag located at the bottom of the bug description and deleting the 'needs-upstream-testing' text. Please let us know your results.

Thanks in advance.

@pasta, care to actually test the more recent Karmic Beta - http://cdimage.ubuntu.com/releases/karmic/ . It contains a newer 2.6.31 based kernel. You should be able to test using a LiveCD. If the issue remains, please run:

apport-collect -p linux 26464
