Bug Description

Hello,
I was trying for some time to get some sound in Ubuntu/Mint from 7.04 onwards. With no result.
I have a Philips Ultimate Edge with VIA Envy24 VT1722 chip. I have read that the soundcard is not supported by ALSA, but there seems that support for soundcards with this chip exists.
There is also an onboard sound. But I guess I blocked that: it's disabled in BIOS and I also blacklisted in /etc/modprobe.d/blacklist.
The volume is always mutes (in volume control). I tried to unmute in the alsamixer, but the controls like "M" or up/down arrows have no effect.
The sound devices listed in the graphical gui are so many - and none is working: IEC1724, IEC1724 IEC958, ALSA, ESD, OSS, PulseAudio.
I have read the forums for months, but now I lost faith. I thought to post it here.
If someone will try to help I will be grateful.
Thank you,
nln

The Ubuntu Kernel Team is planning to move to the 2.6.27 kernel for the upcoming Intrepid Ibex 8.10 release. As a result, the kernel team would appreciate it if you could please test this newer 2.6.27 Ubuntu kernel. There are one of two ways you should be able to test:

1) If you are comfortable installing packages on your own, the linux-image-2.6.27-* package is currently available for you to install and test.

--or--

2) The upcoming Alpha5 for Intrepid Ibex 8.10 will contain this newer 2.6.27 Ubuntu kernel. Alpha5 is set to be released Thursday Sept 4. Please watch http://www.ubuntu.com/testing for Alpha5 to be announced. You should then be able to test via a LiveCD.

Please let us know immediately if this newer 2.6.27 kernel resolves the bug reported here or if the issue remains. More importantly, please open a new bug report for each new bug/regression introduced by the 2.6.27 kernel and tag the bug report with 'linux-2.6.27'. Also, please specifically note if the issue does or does not appear in the 2.6.26 kernel. Thanks again, we really appreicate your help and feedback.

The Intrepid Ibex 8.10 Beta release was most recently announced - http://www.ubuntu.com/testing/intrepid/beta . It contains the 2.6.27 Ubuntu kernel. It would be great if you could test and verify if this is still an issue. The status is being set to Incomplete until we receive further feedback. Thanks.

I have tested in Intrepid alpha 5. The persistent muted sign is gone. I can unmute the channels, I can try every sound devices, but the result is still no sound.
Nevertheless I have noticed that after boot the channels are always at zero level.

The sound with Envy24 chip is still not working properly on the current Ubuntu release. There are three scenarios happenning:
1º The sound works perfectly on both channels.
2º The sound only works in one channel.
3º The sound doesn't work at all.

Once the system starts up, the sound maintains stable, but after a reboot any of the 3 cases above can happen.
