Bug Description
Hello,
I have just installed 8.04 on a new laptop (Lenovo 3000 n200), and Ubuntu believes I have sound: I can see the volume control, it is not muted, I can change the volume, etc, etc... but I can't hear anything!!!
On the Windows Vista that came with the PC, the sound works fine.
I have read the sound troubleshooting guide at https:/
**** List of PLAYBACK Hardware Devices ****
card 0: Intel [HDA Intel], device 0: ALC861VD Analog [ALC861VD Analog]
Subdevices: 1/1
Subdevice #0: subdevice #0
So it says "check if the mixer is muted", but it isn't.
What can I do?
Thank you very much for your help.
Regards,
Luis.
P.S.: I have tried many ways of playing sounds... for example the "sound preferences" panel, telling it to test sound on all the listed devices, with silence as result. I have also tried of course with music and video players (e.g. VLC), flash (mixturtle.com), with the same silent result in all cases.

Hi Nick,
I read in the dictionary that "triaged" means something like "queued based
on priority"... is there a way I could know the priority and/or estimated
processing time of this bug?
The rest of the system runs so smooth and cool in my laptop that it is a
pity there is no sound :-). And of course the bug will probably affect the
other users who own the same laptop model.
Thank you,
Luis.

I can confirm this bug. Seems I have exactly the same Notebook with the same hardware. Except my kernel is a little newer. This may be helpfull. Dmesg gives:
[ 33.588271] hda_codec: Unknown model for ALC660VD/ALC861VD, trying auto-probe from BIOS...
Tried the originaly delivered BIOS Version and the lastest. Still no sound ...

The Ubuntu Kernel Team is planning to move to the 2.6.27 kernel for the upcoming Intrepid Ibex 8.10 release. As a result, the kernel team would appreciate it if you could please test this newer 2.6.27 Ubuntu kernel. There are one of two ways you should be able to test:
1) If you are comfortable installing packages on your own, the linux-image-
--or--
2) The upcoming Alpha5 for Intrepid Ibex 8.10 will contain this newer 2.6.27 Ubuntu kernel. Alpha5 is set to be released Thursday Sept 4. Please watch http://
Please let us know immediately if this newer 2.6.27 kernel resolves the bug reported here or if the issue remains. More importantly, please open a new bug report for each new bug/regression introduced by the 2.6.27 kernel and tag the bug report with 'linux-2.6.27'. Also, please specifically note if the issue does or does not appear in the 2.6.26 kernel. Thanks again, we really appreicate your help and feedback.

Hi Leann,
As far as I understand the image package is just a single compressed file
that I can easily test under a new entry in the grub menu, or even by
editing the boot command line. If so, it seems easy enough, just tell me
where to download this kernel and I will try it right away.
In any case, if it works, can I keep using the new kernel or is it maybe
unstable/
Thank you very much,
Luis.

Leann, forget my previous e-mail:
I googled for " linux-image-2.6.27" and understood that by "package" you
mean apt-get install etc.., so I downloaded and installed the package, then
manually added an entry to menu.lst.
The result is that YES, sound now works... I suppose you can mark the bug as
fixed in 8.10.
Unfortunately with this version I have video problems and the wireless
adapter is not detected (among other problems), so I had to uninstall it and
go back to the original. Hopefully this test will have left no trace, and
when 8.10 is automatically installed by the update manager I will finally be
able to enjoy sound in Ubuntu.
Thank you very much.
Luis.

Thanks for testing and the feedback Luis. If you don't mind, would you actually care to open new bug reports for each of the separate issues you saw arrise with 2.6.27. We're particularly intersted in regressions you see from using 2.6.26 and 2.6.27. So if you could comment if the issues exist with 2.6.26 in those new bug reports as well that would be great. I'm not sure if you tested 2.6.26 in the first place but you should be able to test 2.6.26 via a LiveCD - http://
Luis (lcrespom) wrote : | #13 |
Sure, I am very interested in collaborating in finding regression problems,
as they would otherwise affect my own system when I install 8.10 in two
months time. However:
- The video problem was definitely related with the fact that I am using
Nvidia restricted drivers, which got misconfigured.
- If you don't mind I will test 2.6.27 with the LiveCD of Alpha5, because
the test I did yesterday caused quite a disruption and misconfiguration on
my environment (it even changed the keyboard settings :-?), and it took some
time to put everything back into place.
Regards,
Luis.

Hi,
I suggest adding the following line to /etc/modprobe.
options snd-hda-intel model=lenovo

Hey guys, sorry for the delay.
Back from holiday I tried the Intrepid kernel, too. And, what can I say, sound works fine. Thanks Leann!
So far no problems with the new kernel. I will update the whole system to Intrepid Alpha and continue testing.
@Colin
I tried these 3 options. None of them worked for me:
# options snd-hda-intel position_fix=1 model=3stack
# options snd-hda-intel model=lenovo
# options snd-hda-intel position_fix=1 model=lenovo
so installing the new kernel is the only option.

Hi Ajaxian,
When I installed the alpha kernel, sound worked but my wireless adapter
stopped working and also the video resolution went down to 640x480. I
reinstalled the proprietary NVidia drivers but probably did something wrong,
since I could not go above 800x600...(?). At some moment even the keyboard
layout was wrong!!!... so I went back to the stable kernel and no sound.
So if you manage to use the alpha kernel without problems, please tell me
how you did it and I will follow your steps 8-).
Regards,
Luis.

Hey Luis,
I installed the alpha kernel from the Intrepid repository and switched
the display driver from proprietary "nvidia" to the open source driver
"nv". Compiling a new kernel module for the nvidia driver didn't work
for me, yet. So now I have no composite Bling Bling but sound seems to
me more important.

Matthias

Hi,
Just to notify that in my case, the line "options snd-hda-intel
model=lenovo" in alsa-base did work for me and now I have sound.
Thank you very much for your help!!!

Luis.

Hi Matthias,
Probably we don't have the same Lenovo model, because the "options
snd-hda-intel model=lenovo" line worked for me, and on the other hand, the
alpha kernel also disabled the wireless driver.... (?).

Luis.

I'm setting this to "Fix Released" since Luis the original bug reporter has commented this particular bug is resolved for Intrepid. For anyone still experiencing issues, please open a new bug report. Thanks.

Please include the information requested from the "Reporting Sound Bugs" section of https:/ /wiki.ubuntu. com/DebuggingSo undProblems as separate attachments.
