Laptop doesn't power off after shutdown on Toshiba Satellite SA40-211

My laptop (Toshiba Satellite SA40-211) doesn't power off after I shut down Ubuntu.

I'm using Hardy Heron with all updates applied. The Laptop is a dual boot system with windows XP. After shutting down XP, the laptop always powers down the normal way. When I use ubuntu, it almost never does.

The Ubuntu Kernel Team is planning to move to the 2.6.27 kernel for the upcoming Intrepid Ibex 8.10 release. As a result, the kernel team would appreciate it if you could please test this newer 2.6.27 Ubuntu kernel. There are one of two ways you should be able to test:

1) If you are comfortable installing packages on your own, the linux-image-2.6.27-* package is currently available for you to install and test.

--or--

2) The upcoming Alpha5 for Intrepid Ibex 8.10 will contain this newer 2.6.27 Ubuntu kernel. Alpha5 is set to be released Thursday Sept 4. Please watch http://www.ubuntu.com/testing for Alpha5 to be announced. You should then be able to test via a LiveCD.

Please let us know immediately if this newer 2.6.27 kernel resolves the bug reported here or if the issue remains. More importantly, please open a new bug report for each new bug/regression introduced by the 2.6.27 kernel and tag the bug report with 'linux-2.6.27'. The Intrepid Ibex 8.10 Beta release was most recently announced - http://www.ubuntu.com/testing/intrepid/beta . It contains the 2.6.27 Ubuntu kernel. It would be great if you could test and verify if this is still an issue. The status is being set to Incomplete until we receive further feedback. Thanks.

This is still an issue.

Also, when it has shutdown (or at least, the screen becomes black after the normal shutdown progressbar has been shown, no errors or warnings visible) there is a lot of harddisk activity, so I guess its not just not powering off, it is also hanging in some task. I let it run for half an hour, but the harddisk just keeps working on something.

Can you provide some additional information regarding which Intrepid kernel you used? ie 'cat /proc/version_signature' . Additionally, Intrepid's final release is set to be release tomorrow. Care to confirm this is still an issue or resolved with the final release?

I've the same problem since Ubuntu 7.10 version.
I have a Toshiba A105-S2716 notebook.

When I was on Ubuntu 7.04, I patched this bug with a workaround from https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/linux-source-2.6.15/+bug/36158 on Eduardo Durany Fernández comment "Possible workaround". But, since I upgraded to Ubuntu 7.10 and then to 8.04, the workaround did not worked.

Well, now I'm here trying to help.

Some minutes later I found a "fix", a work around can I say to the bug.
In this topic https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/linux/+bug/43961 was sugested to remove the snd_hda_intel module. So I followed the last comment and added "/sbin/rmmod snd_hda_intel" in /etc/default/halt. And whoopy! The shutdown works.

Maybe this workaround helps to fix the problem.

The last comment sound like this is a BIOS <--> sound hardware issue. Can you confirm this issue exists with the most recent Jaunty Jackalope 9.04 release - http://www.ubuntu.com/news/ubuntu-9.04-desktop . Please let us know your results. Thanks.
