suspend to ram stopped working on Thinkpad T61

Yesterday morning suspend to ram worked fine.
I did some updates and installed a few packages (see below) and restarted. Now suspend doesn't suspends. I left click power manager tray icon and select suspend, the screen saver starts as usual, but after a few seconds starts a blinking cursor in top left of screen instead of suspending. No blinking moon lamps. Disk and fan still runs.

The funny thing is that I can type Alt-F7 and the screen saver wakeup dialog comes up and I can type the password to get back to business.

/var/log/messages just displays:

I have a Lenovo Thinkpad T61 64608NG with 4GB RAM and nvidia Quadro NVS 140M.

 * Output of uname -a
    * uname -a > uname.txt
 * Output of sudo lspci -vvnn
    * sudo lspci -vvnn > lspci.txt
 * Output of sudo dmidecode
    * sudo dmidecode > dmidecode.txt
 * Try to suspend/hibernate and then restart the system and attach /var/log/kern.log and /var/log/kern.log.0
 * Tarball of /proc/acpi directory. You can't just tar all files because their content sometimes changes etc.
    * cp -r /proc/acpi /tmp
    * tar -cvjf ~/acpi.tar.bz /tmp/acpi
    * attach acpi.tar.bz from your home directory

I have reistalled 8.04 on another disk, and added all current update, and most programs I had. Suspend works. I keep the the disk with the problematic installation for a while.

The Ubuntu Kernel Team is planning to move to the 2.6.27 kernel for the upcoming Intrepid Ibex 8.10 release. As a result, the kernel team would appreciate it if you could please test this newer 2.6.27 Ubuntu kernel. There are one of two ways you should be able to test:

1) If you are comfortable installing packages on your own, the linux-image-2.6.27-* package is currently available for you to install and test.

--or--

2) The upcoming Alpha5 for Intrepid Ibex 8.10 will contain this newer 2.6.27 Ubuntu kernel. Alpha5 is set to be released Thursday Sept 4. Please watch http://www.ubuntu.com/testing for Alpha5 to be announced. You should then be able to test via a LiveCD.

Please let us know immediately if this newer 2.6.27 kernel resolves the bug reported here or if the issue remains. More importantly, please open a new bug report for each new bug/regression introduced by the 2.6.27 kernel and tag the bug report with 'linux-2.6.27'. @Dan: since it works after a reinstall, could this have something to do with nVidia-specific settings in the X config (Bug #34043) or in POST_VIDEO or SAVE_VBE flags in the acpi scripts? Could you check your two systems for such differences?

I think I've found the cause: this apparently happens when there is an existing file /.suspend on the system. I removed this file, and I'm back to the old behavior (suspend working modulo the USB bug).
