I got the same problem. Tried with today's (080708) daily with the same result.

There also is a thread on the subject on the ubuntu-devel-discuss ML.

Same problem here:

First I installed Hardy Heron in Virtualbox without problems and then I upgraded Heron to Intrepid. Now if I boot Intrepid it fails with the "unable to handle kernel" message (except if I use the old kernel from the Hardy Heron install, which was still available - 2.6.24*).

My second try was with the intrepid alpha 1 Install CD, but this fails from the beginning with the "unable to handle kernel" message.

Workaround:

Boot the VM with something within it selected ie. just press inside the VM-window with the mouse then press enter so that the mouse is captured. Then don't change the focus until the installation is completed and the OS is installed.

I just booted up with this method.

After booting the system I did a full upgrade and got a new kernel (2.6.26-3). Booting that one gives me another crash but now a different kind. Please see attached screenshot for full details.

Kernel panic: Not syncing: Fatal exception in interrupt

Same problem using (X/K)Ubuntu 8.10 Alpha 2 on my VirtualBox 1.6.0 and 1.6.2 (on a 8.04 AMD64 system).

@ThomasNovin:
This workaround doesn't work on my system....

Same problem with the Alpha 3 release (i386 desktop image on a Virtualbox AMD64 system).

Do you think it is an Ubuntu bug or maybe a Virtualbox's one?

Additionally, I have also the same problem with the alternate install image.
