Bug Description

Binary package hint: linux-image-2.6.24-16-generic

Using Asus v1s laptop. alsa-base package v. 1.0.16-0ubuntu4
Speakers work, as do headphones. However, the headphones never mute the speakers when plugged in.
Will attach output of:
uname -a
sudo lspci -vvnn
dpkg -s linux-ubuntu-modules-$(uname -r)
and the output of the script that can be found at http://hg.alsa-project.org/alsa/raw-file/tip/alsa-info.sh as was suggested at https://wiki.ubuntu.com/DebuggingSoundProblems
Let me know if there is anymore info needed.

The Ubuntu Kernel Team is planning to move to the 2.6.27 kernel for the upcoming Intrepid Ibex 8.10 release. As a result, the kernel team would appreciate it if you could please test this newer 2.6.27 Ubuntu kernel. There are one of two ways you should be able to test:

1) If you are comfortable installing packages on your own, the linux-image-2.6.27-* package is currently available for you to install and test.

--or--

2) The upcoming Alpha5 for Intrepid Ibex 8.10 will contain this newer 2.6.27 Ubuntu kernel. Alpha5 is set to be released Thursday Sept 4. Please watch http://www.ubuntu.com/testing for Alpha5 to be announced. You should then be able to test via a LiveCD.

Please let us know immediately if this newer 2.6.27 kernel resolves the bug reported here or if the issue remains. More importantly, please open a new bug report for each new bug/regression introduced by the 2.6.27 kernel and tag the bug report with 'linux-2.6.27'. Also, please specifically note if the issue does or does not appear in the 2.6.26 kernel. Thanks again, we really appreicate your help and feedback.

Well this might be a lot late, but here is an update on this issue...:
Currently I am on
Linux noshelter 2.6.28-11-generic #42-Ubuntu SMP Fri Apr 17 01:58:03 UTC 2009 x86_64 GNU/Linux
and the issue is still present.
I have found a workaround: muting the front channel, will mute the speakers but not the headphones. The headphones do however depend on the volume level on the front channel, but if you mute the channel, it will not affect the volume level for the headphones... weird , but it works.
Now this is pretty much the needed headphone sensitivity, done manually.
Hope that helps somebody.

Hi grim66662003,

Please be sure to confirm this issue exists with the latest development release of Ubuntu. ISO CD images are available from http://cdimage.ubuntu.com/releases/ . Please then run the following command from a Terminal (Applications->Accessories->Terminal). It will automatically gather and attach updated debug information to this report.

apport-collect -p alsa-base 229330

Also, if you could test the latest upstream kernel available that would be great. It will allow additional upstream developers to examine the issue. Refer to https://wiki.ubuntu.com/KernelMainlineBuilds . Once you've tested the upstream kernel, please remove the 'needs-upstream-testing' tag. This can be done by clicking on the yellow pencil icon next to the tag located at the bottom of the bug description and deleting the 'needs-upstream-testing' text. Please let us know your results.

Thanks in advance.

Sorry for the double post, ran the second time as root, to include dmesg log, although im not sure how much it will help.
Problem still exists with the alpha version of 9.10.

Again, the workaround IS still valid:
Muting the front channel in volume control will mute the front speakers, but not the headphones. This is the needed headphone sensitivity done manually.

Same problem/workaround exists with the latest kernel.
Tested on my current 9.04 install, since I didn't want to do a 9.10 install - however I don't think that would have made much of a difference.

Cheers

Same problem here. I have DELL VOSTRO 1088. Conexant ID 5067.

I've updated to the latest updates. But still the internal speakers / headphones and the external speakers love to work simultaneously.

I've tried OSS in Jaunty before I updated to Karmic. OSS fixed the problem when I set the output as pcm2 in the volume preferences.
