Arch linux stalls during "loading Udev uevents" and outputs a blank screen. I get a blinking cursor in the upper left corner when I run the Ubuntu live CD with "acpi=off".
I also get a GRUB error 2 when I try to boot Archlive from a USB drive unless I switch the "order of the hdds" whatever that means form the BIOS and put the USB drive before the HDD. Someone suggested in a thread in the ubuntu forums to switch off auto recognition of IDE [sic] devices (a SATA HDD and SATA DVD drive) and use DMA, but the two options in the BIOS are auto and disabled.
