Bug Description

Binary package hint: debian-installer

I was doing some iso testing this evening for the final images prior to release and I found that the i386 installer can not reboot post-installation. It stalls at:

Sending SIGKILL to all processes.
Please standby while rebooting the system.
[foo.foo] SD2:0:0:0: [sda] synchronizing SCSI cache
[foo.foo] ACPI: PCI Interrupt for device 0000:0C:02.0 Disabled
[foo.foo] Restarting System

The machine must be powered down manually to be restarted.

The amd64bit installer on the other hand (tested on the same hardware) rebooted just fine with no issues.

This is on Dell Precision 490 N Series. See attached cpuinfo output.

This is probably a kernel bug so I'm changing the package to the kernel for Hardy Heron.

This is usually a matter of adding a quirk for your machine. Does adding the 'reboot=b' kernel parameter help?

Please attach the output of 'sudo dmidecode'.

'reboot=b' appended to the kernel does cause it to reboot as expected, yes. So far I have only tried post-install and not during-install.

attached is the output of dmidecode and also /var/log/dmesg (line 558? I saw some output during boot about disabling reboot)

The Ubuntu Kernel Team is planning to move to the 2.6.27 kernel for the upcoming Intrepid Ibex 8.10 release. As a result, the kernel team would appreciate it if you could please test this newer 2.6.27 Ubuntu kernel. There are one of two ways you should be able to test:

1) If you are comfortable installing packages on your own, the linux-image-2.6.27-* package is currently available for you to install and test.

--or--

2) The upcoming Alpha5 for Intrepid Ibex 8.10 will contain this newer 2.6.27 Ubuntu kernel. Alpha5 is set to be released Thursday Sept 4. Please watch http://www.ubuntu.com/testing for Alpha5 to be announced. You should then be able to test via a LiveCD.

Please let us know immediately if this newer 2.6.27 kernel resolves the bug reported here or if the issue remains. More importantly, please open a new bug report for each new bug/regression introduced by the 2.6.27 kernel and tag the bug report with 'linux-2.6.27'. Also, please specifically note if the issue does or does not appear in the 2.6.26 kernel. Thanks again, we really appreicate your help and feedback.

Hi Christer,

Based on the dmidecode information you attached it doesn't look like a quirk has been added yet to the kernel for your system. Care to just quickly confirm the issue still exists with the latest pre-release of Jaunty and that the reboot=b workaround is still valid for Jaunty. http://cdimage.ubuntu.com/releases/jaunty/alpha-2/ . Definitely let us know your results. Thanks.

Unfortunately I no longer have access to that hardware and am unable to
test.

Bummer, ok thanks for the note anyways. Without having access to the hardware to test and confirm a patch I'm just going to go ahead and close this bug out. Thanks.
