Hi Guys,

I assume this is still an issue with Hardy Final. Is there anything else output along with that message? Would you be able to boot with the "quiet" and "splash" options removed (or boot in the recovery mode) and take a digital photo of your screen when this occurs and attach it to this bug report? Thanks.

Thanks for getting back to us... unfortunately I don't have a camera atm, will see if I can borrow one shortly. I did get you the last line before it hanged.

ok, borrowed a camera, ran the install with "quiet" & "splash"... and it worked. It installed withour a hitch. I'm using 8.04 now to write this. I don't know if I can be of any other help regarding this, something was certainly a problem somewhere, if there is anything I can add then please let me know.

Spoke too soon. I encountered the same problem again after a reboot, I will get the camera again and try to get a shot. However, I was able to go to recovery mode and then boot normally once given the option. Please let me know if there is anything else I can provide from a working OS that might help you. I have attached my dmesg.

I am having this problem too when upgrading to 8.04. My laptop is a sony vaio vgn-c25g. I can install ubuntu 8.04 fine but when i try to boot it it says:
[ time(secs)] BUG: soft lockup - CPU#1 stuck for 11s! [modprobe:1291]
where time(secs) is the time its been trying to run.

I've just got around to installing this again and have used acpi=off this time, it installed without any problems, however, after a reboot I have:

ACPI: EC: acpi_ec_wait timeout, status = 0, expect event = 1
ACPI: EC: read timeout, command = 128

I can boot in recovery and choose 'boot normally'.

I unplugged the battery charger and rebooted again, this boots up without errors. I tried this several times to check and can boot with none of the soft lock ups by having installed with acpi=off and no acpi_ec_wait error when booting with the battery charger disconnected.

As soon as I plug the charger back in and reboot the errors return:
ACPI: EC: acpi_ec_wait timeout, status = 0, expect event = 1
ACPI: EC: read timeout, command = 128

I have now tried this with both 32bit & 64bit versions, the same errors occur in both cases. I am using kernel 2.6.24-16 to install, the recent upgrade to 2.6.24-17 has not solved the problem.

Please let me know if I can do anything else to make this bug report more complete.

Hi Guys,

Sorry for the delayed response. It seems that this report may actually be a duplicate of bug 191137. Care to take a look? I also escalated that report to the kernel team mailing list - https://lists.ubuntu.com/archives/kernel-team/2008-April/002288.html in which TJ did some extra debugging which might be interesting to you. For now I'll mark this as a duplicate of bug 191137. If you feel this is inaccurate please feel free to revert the duplication. Thanks.
