Bug Description

My external USB hard drive mounts normally but causes a complete system lock up after some seconds to one minute of read/writes.

This only happens under X, using the console the lock up never happens. However, it's a complete system lock up, any running process becomes unresponsive. I can't retrieve any information through ssh form another computer (as explained at https://wiki.ubuntu.com/DebuggingSystemCrash), and Music Player Daemon freezes playing a loop. dmesg doesn't contain any information about the error.

Disabling ehci_hcd, the drives mounts through usb 1.1 and performs normally.

See attached files for detail on the hardware.

I've forgot to mention that this bug only happens under 2.6.24. With Gutsy kernel it does not happen though i have bug #88746 (ehci_hcd module causes I/O errors in USB 2.0 devices), which may be related.

Turns out to only occur on a NTFS partition.

I've just formatted the drive to ext3, and the freeze does not happen anymore.

Oh well, i've also updated the kernel to 2.6.24-17, so i can't be sure what has fixed the problem...

Wrong. The bug's still here.

It has not happened for a ~30 minute lapse of time yesterday possibly because it only made very few write operations (some almost stalled torrent downloads and the copy of two small files) though it read much data (an intensive torrent check file integrity and a lot of image browsing).

When i tried to copy a large file (~1Go), the freeze occured half-way.

So, it is not related to ntfs3g nor fixed by 2.6.24-17.

After some more experiment, i can confirm that the curious thing is that X is involved. Using nv or nvidia driver does not matter (should i try vesa ?).

When i start a file transfer to my external HD using nautilus and immediately switch to console, everything goes normally, so does if i directly use the cp command in console mode. The freeze only happens when X is active.

Is there anything i can do to provide more information? I can't execute Alt+Sysreq commands to dump information on in the console because the bug only happen under X.

I can confirm the bug even on kernel vanilla > 2.6.25
U can normally transfer files from devices to the system (and viceversa) without X and everythink works great
With X running (and nvidia card) after few seconds the system got freeze with no I/O log .

On recent 2.6.24-17 from ubuntu hardy ehci-hcd works..maybe they have applied a sort of patch.

Hi Divilinux, could you post detailed information about your hardware, so that we can compare? On my hardware, 2.6.24-17 does not solve the problem at all...

of course..
I have a standard Lenovo n200 with few kernels from 2.6.24 to 2.6.26rc4..but i usually hold the -generic one to make some tests.
With kernel 2.6.24 (vanilla) is all ok..with 2.6.24-17-generic is ok...problems start with kernel > 2.6.25 with no output given (on crash)

The Ubuntu Kernel Team is planning to move to the 2.6.27 kernel for the upcoming Intrepid Ibex 8.10 release. As a result, the kernel team would appreciate it if you could please test this newer 2.6.27 Ubuntu kernel. There are one of two ways you should be able to test:

1) If you are comfortable installing packages on your own, the linux-image-2.6.27-* package is currently available for you to install and test.

--or--

2) The upcoming Alpha5 for Intrepid Ibex 8.10 will contain this newer 2.6.27 Ubuntu kernel. Alpha5 is set to be released Thursday Sept 4. Please watch http://www.ubuntu.com/testing for Alpha5 to be announced. You should then be able to test via a LiveCD.

Please let us know immediately if this newer 2.6.27 kernel resolves the bug reported here or if the issue remains. More importantly, please open a new bug report for each new bug/regression introduced by the 2.6.27 kernel and tag the bug report with 'linux-2.6.27'. Also, please specifically note if the issue does or does not appear in the 2.6.26 kernel. Thanks again, we really appreicate your help and feedback.

Per a decision made by the Ubuntu Kernel Team, bugs will longer be assigned to the ubuntu-kernel-team in Launchpad as part of the bug triage process. The ubuntu-kernel-team is being unassigned from this bug report. Refer to https://wiki.ubuntu.com/KernelTeamBugPolicies for more information. Thanks.
