Bug Description

After upgrading my Hardy kernel from 2.6.24-15 to 2.6.24-16, my PC hangs at boot time for about 5-10 minutes.

I get this error at boot time:
iTCO_wdt: failed to reset NO_REBOOT flag, reboot disabled by hardware

I have a Dell E520 desktop PC with Intel MB:

This seems to happen only when starting the system after halting it.
If I reboot the system I still get the error message but the boot process goes ahead well.

Still here on stable release.

I experience nearly the same problem (I see this string while booting my laptop, but I don't have any major delays during boot), and, obviously, my machine freezes when I try to reboot it.
I have Asus G1s laptop. Please tell me what info I can provide to help locating the bug.

The same message here.

It looks like it's related to the onboard intel network card on my Dell GX260.
This networkcard is set as default.

I am using Hardy Server edition.

I am confirming this behavior on my Dell Dimension 9200. Unless instructed how, I can't provide any more information than that I am unable to reboot my computer, and I get the message, "iTCO_wdt: failed to reset NO_REBOOT flag, reboot disabled by hardware" at startup. However, I do not experience any serious delay in the bootup process.

I'm using Ubuntu 8.04, Desktop Edition with latest updates as of today including proposed updates.

I don't think it is a duplicate of bug #213754.
This only happens to me when starting the system , and not on reboot. Rebooting the system goes fine.
In bug #213754 they talk about they can't reboot.
I have found that this happens to me when I have connected my usb 3G modem (option_icon that uses "option" and "usbserial" kernel modules).
If I disconnect the usb modem's cable the system boot up without hangin'.

Thanks for your report.
The iTCO_wdt error is due to module iTCO_wdt . This drivers should not be loaded automatically, but only if a watchdog daemon is installed.
To get rid of this error at boot time add the line "blacklist iTCO_wdt" to /etc/modprobe.d/blacklist-watchdog

I don't think this is causing the hanging issue. Can you try to blacklist this module and report here if it fixes the hanging issue or not.

Thanks.

I just experienced this problem on a coldboot (although I was too impatient to wait the 5-10 minutes to see if it recovered).
Adding the blacklist ITCO_wdt fixes the hanging issue.

Running Intrepid , uname 2.6.27-4-generic i686

I updated last night. It coldbooted fine this morning, but doing a cold boot this afternoon had failed
after a few installs and an update. I have attached the portion of /var/log/apt/term.log that contains
the updates/installs between working coldboot and non-working coldboot.

I'm running Ubuntu 9.04(2.6.28-11-server) on a server that primarily is used for PostGres8.3, the server reboots randomly every now and then(10-15 days or more). When I do a $dmesg | grep reboot I get:
[ 7.523590] iTCO_wdt: failed to reset NO_REBOOT flag, reboot disabled by hardware

Now I'm not sure if the server issue directly relates to this bug. But I think I see a connection of my particular problem with https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/linux/+bug/381501
