Bug Description

I'm running an updated(2008-04-15) Hardy release on my Acer Aspire 3003LMi
In previous releases i had a working battery meter but now it doesn't detect it at all.

When I try to run "cat /proc/acpi/battery/BAT1/state" i only get
cat: /proc/acpi/battery/BAT1/state: Bad address

There hasn't been any recent activity in this bug report and we were wondering if this is still an issue? The Ubuntu kernel team is actively working on the upcoming Intrepid Ibex 8.10 release. If you could please test the latest Alpha release for Intrepid it would be much appreciated - http://www.ubuntu.com/testing . Please let us know your results. If the issue still exists, please also provide the appropriate debugging information as outlined at https://wiki.ubuntu.com/KernelTeamBugPolicies . Thanks in advance.

The Ubuntu Kernel Team is planning to move to the 2.6.27 kernel for the upcoming Intrepid Ibex 8.10 release. As a result, the kernel team would appreciate it if you could please test this newer 2.6.27 Ubuntu kernel. There are one of two ways you should be able to test:

1) If you are comfortable installing packages on your own, the linux-image-2.6.27-* package is currently available for you to install and test.

--or--

2) The upcoming Alpha5 for Intrepid Ibex 8.10 will contain this newer 2.6.27 Ubuntu kernel. Alpha5 is set to be released Thursday Sept 4. Please watch http://www.ubuntu.com/testing for Alpha5 to be announced. You should then be able to test via a LiveCD.

Please let us know immediately if this newer 2.6.27 kernel resolves the bug reported here or if the issue remains. More importantly, please open a new bug report for each new bug/regression introduced by the 2.6.27 kernel and tag the bug report with 'linux-2.6.27'. Also, please specifically note if the issue does or does not appear in the 2.6.26 kernel. Thanks again, we really appreicate your help and feedback.

I have a Dell Inspiron 6400 with Ubuntu 8.10 and I also don't get my battery detected (and thus, not charged).

#cat /proc/acpi/battery/BAT0/info

#hal-find-by-capability --capability "battery"
[no output]

Should I try kernel 2.6.26? What other output do you need?

Is there anything more I can do to help fix this bug? I currently have no ability to charge my battery ... which on a laptop is quite frustrating.

I just installed Fedora 10, which uses kernel 2.6.27.5-117.fc10.i686 and it also can't find my battery. So it's either a kernel issue or a real hardware one :(

You may want to try the latest pre-release of Jaunty (currently Alpha3) - http://cdimage.ubuntu.com/releases/jaunty/ . It contains a 2.6.28 based kernel. Please let us know your results. Thanks.

On my account it must have been a hardware/bios error. Windows on the same machine behaves just as bad if not worse. For the moment I have to run with the battery disconnected all together to get the machine working as it should.
I would close this issue with "wont fix" or similar.

On Acer Aspire One 521 the battery is not detected.

#cat /proc/acpi/battery/BAT0/info
present: no

Of course no tab for battery mode in gnome-power-manager and the symbol in panel always shows the ac symbol.

Are there any news on that topic?

Thanks
