It unfortunately appears that this bug is not yet resolved. The Intrepid Ibex 8.10 Alpha2 is scheduled for release today. It will appear at the following when available: http://www.ubuntu.com/testing/intrepid/alpha2 . It contains the the actively developed 2.6.26 Ubuntu kernel. It would be great if you could test this upcoming release via a LiveCD and verify if the issue still exists. If so, please include the appropriate debugging information as outlined at https://wiki.ubuntu.com/DebuggingSoundProblems . Thanks in advance.

I seem to be having a similar problem;

[ 31.409616] hda_codec: Unknown model for ALC883, trying auto-probe from BIOS...

aplay -l produces;

**** List of PLAYBACK Hardware Devices ****
card 0: VT82xx [HDA VIA VT82xx], device 0: ALC883 Analog [ALC883 Analog]
  Subdevices: 1/1

card 0: VT82xx [HDA VIA VT82xx], device 1: ALC883 Digital [ALC883 Digital]
  Subdevices: 1/1
  Subdevice #0: subdevice #0

Unfortunately I am getting no sound at all. Any further info needed, just shout.

I found that I am getting sound. All of the settings were on mute. However, I still get the above problem.

The Ubuntu Kernel Team is planning to move to the 2.6.27 kernel for the upcoming Intrepid Ibex 8.10 release. As a result, the kernel team would appreciate it if you could please test this newer 2.6.27 Ubuntu kernel. There are one of two ways you should be able to test:

1) If you are comfortable installing packages on your own, the linux-image-2.6.27-* package is currently available for you to install and test.

--or--

2) The upcoming Alpha5 for Intrepid Ibex 8.10 will contain this newer 2.6.27 Ubuntu kernel. Alpha5 is set to be released Thursday Sept 4. Please watch http://www.ubuntu.com/testing for Alpha5 to be announced. You should then be able to test via a LiveCD.

Please let us know immediately if this newer 2.6.27 kernel resolves the bug reported here or if the issue remains. More importantly, please open a new bug report for each new bug/regression introduced by the 2.6.27 kernel and tag the bug report with 'linux-2.6.27'. Also, please specifically note if the issue does or does not appear in the 2.6.26 kernel. Thanks again, we really appreicate your help and feedback.

I have the same problem and it appear when I install nvidia newer drivers.

169 version nvidia installed from ubuntu is working and sound works as well, but the driver is not suitable for my new 9500 GT card and that's why I have tryed to install nvidia 173 and 177 drivers. They both take the sound of for some reason. Screen is normal. No errors in /var/log/Xorg.0.log.

If I connect phones to the same plug I can heard sound all drivers, but the same connection to the SONY LCD TV is quiet. With ubuntu's 169 driver TV and phones are working with sound in the same plug.

Hope that help you somehow - I cannot understand. I have done it 3 times allready and same result every time.

Hello!
Please excuse me if i am posting at the wrong place (and please ask me if i should open a separate bug report).

My ALC883 audio (embedded audio on motherboard) stopped working a week or 2 ago. I have been using Ubuntu 8.10 since the beta or so and sound has been working. After an upgrade 1-2 weeks ago, the sound stopped working.
Sound was also working in Ubuntu 8.04 and 7.10 on the same computer.
There appears to come some kind of sound to the stereo since i hear some wierd clicking noise (very low) when playing audio files or movies.

While looking for the right place to report this, i stumbled upon bug #148097 which actually might be related in my case. I use DVI output to my tv, with a DVI->HDMI adapter (DVI can only carry the video signal afaik).
Also i have a nvidia gfx card (i mention this because i do belive the issue has something to do with the nvidia driver's recent addition of hdmi audio support). The only two nvidia drivers that i can choose between is 173 and 177. I tried both but still no sound.

Hm. Please ignore my previous post, I got sound back by playing with the Volume Control. "PCM" output was down to 0%. Sorry I didnt figure that out before posting.

The above messages from the kernel ring buffer are not errors. Briefly, the codec initialisation routine simply reports that there is no hard-coded quirk for your specific make and model of computer and falls back to the bios. (Now if the bios has insane values, that's another matter altogether.)

FYI: I corrected my problem when I found following page:
http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?p=5005441

and the problem was in the file /etc/modprobe.d/alsa-base
I need to add next line depending on my motherboard ASUS P5K:
options snd-hda-intel model=6stack-dig
