Bug Description

Since I dist-upgraded to Hardy all the kernels starting with 2.6.24-12 hang on boot for aprox. 25-30 seconds or more.

See attached dmesg.log there is a lack of 25 seconds between line 89 and 90

I have exactly the same problem, only the kernel hangs for 272 seconds ! At the same place in my dmesg, just after the processor clock has been discovered and before the console is detected.

Major showstopper !

I'm using a AMD SMP Athlon MP 1800+ setup with a Tyan Tiger mainboard.

I'm now experiencing the same behaviour on my Dell Latitude D610. The pause is for about 23 seconds. This is no coincidence.... IMHO thousands of systems must be having this behaviour.
It doesn't really show to 'normal' users, because it happens during the 'graphical' boot phase, when the 'slider widget' is moving left and right (like the Knight rider car).

Just noting that this bug has not yet been fixed in Ubuntu Hardy 8.04.1 ("Linux lt00129 2.6.24-20-generic #1 SMP Mon Jul 28 13:49:52 UTC 2008 i686 GNU/Linux")

My workaround is to run the old 2.6.22-14-generic kernel.

The Ubuntu Kernel Team is planning to move to the 2.6.27 kernel for the upcoming Intrepid Ibex 8.10 release. As a result, the kernel team would appreciate it if you could please test this newer 2.6.27 Ubuntu kernel. There are one of two ways you should be able to test:

1) If you are comfortable installing packages on your own, the linux-image-2.6.27-* package is currently available for you to install and test.

--or--

2) The upcoming Alpha5 for Intrepid Ibex 8.10 will contain this newer 2.6.27 Ubuntu kernel. Alpha5 is set to be released Thursday Sept 4. Please watch http://www.ubuntu.com/testing for Alpha5 to be announced. You should then be able to test via a LiveCD.

Please let us know immediately if this newer 2.6.27 kernel resolves the bug reported here or if the issue remains. More importantly, please open a new bug report for each new bug/regression introduced by the 2.6.27 kernel and tag the bug report with 'linux-2.6.27'. Also, please specifically note if the issue does or does not appear in the 2.6.26 kernel. Thanks again, we really appreicate your help and feedback.
