Bug Description

Binary package hint: gnome-power-manager

Lenovno N200 3000 Type 0687-27U
Ubuntu 8.04 - Hardy

(Same behavior with pm-utils cmd. pm-hibernate)

Hibernating the computer works, current state is written to swap and system resumes just fine.

However, in order to actually get the system to power down after hibernate is done writing state to disk I must
hold the power button on the laptop until the computer shuts off. That is, I wait until the HDD notification light has stopped
blinking and power down manually.

When I turn the comp. back on, hibernate resumes without a hitch.

I think this may be not pm-utils, but kernel related. My two desktop PCs behave the same way as described here. I've submitted more info about it here (last comments added) https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/linux/+bug/201086 , but this bug seems to be closed and no one cares about it anymore. Should I report this as a new bug? Or attach same log files here?

Hi mtretin,

This bug was reported a while ago and there hasn't been any activity in it recently. We were wondering if this is still an issue? Can you try with the latest development release of Ubuntu? ISO CD images are available from http://cdimage.ubuntu.com/releases/ .

If it remains an issue, could you run the following command from a Terminal (Applications->Accessories->Terminal). It will automatically gather and attach updated debug information to this report.

apport-collect -p linux-image-`uname -r` 211336

Also, if you could test the latest upstream kernel available that would be great. It will allow additional upstream developers to examine the issue. Refer to https://wiki.ubuntu.com/KernelMainlineBuilds . Once you've tested the upstream kernel, please remove the 'needs-upstream-testing' tag. This can be done by clicking on the yellow pencil icon next to the tag located at the bottom of the bug description and deleting the 'needs-upstream-testing' text. Please let us know your results.

Thanks in advance.

On my Asus NJ71Ja (Ubuntu 10.10, kernel 2.6.35-23, x64) I also have to power off manually after hibernation (shutdown works fine).

I have tried mainline kernel 2.6.37-rc2-maverick from http://kernel.ubuntu.com/~kernel-ppa/mainline/, with no improvements.

I also looked at bug 595822, and ran the 'fwts' tool linked to in that report - results are attached.

Thank you for taking the time to report this bug and helping to make Ubuntu better. We are sorry that we do not always have the capacity to look at all reported bugs in a timely manner. There have been many changes in Ubuntu since that time you reported the bug and your problem may have been fixed with some of the updates. It would help us a lot if you could test it on a currently supported Ubuntu version. When you test it and it is still an issue, kindly upload the updated logs by running apport-collect 211336 and any other logs that are relevant for this particular issue.

Thanks

This bug is missing log files that will aid in diagnosing the problem. From a terminal window please run:

apport-collect 211336

and then change the status of the bug to 'Confirmed'.

If, due to the nature of the issue you have encountered, you are unable to run this command, please add a comment stating that fact and change the bug status to 'Confirmed'.

This change has been made by an automated script, maintained by the Ubuntu Kernel Team.

I just confirmed the behavior with latest patched kernel 2.6.38-11-generic. First attempt at mainline kernel version 3.1 from http://kernel.ubuntu.com/~kernel-ppa/mainline/daily/current/ failed to get me a real X session. I'll try the mainline version matching 2.6.38, but there are various versions. Can you suggest which one would be best suited to validate the mainline kernel?

The mainline kernels haven't been updated in many weeks anyway (can't the kernel team update their scripts to pull from github while kernel.org is down?) but I'd suggest you try the latest oneiric kernel (based on 3.0.4) first.
