Bug Description

I'm having this freeze at random times, but i cannot track where

sometimes the machine is up for 48 hours and freezes,
and sometimes after login screen by some seconds.

this is what happened:
- the screen and mouse freezes without any activity from X
- when pressing Caps Lock or Num Lock the lights on keyboard are not changing
- i cannot force exit X (Ctrl+Alt+<-)

then i have to hard-reset the machine

and after i check the system logs between the last message of the previous session,
and the new session, there's no indicator of an error message or kernel panic or stack trace,

if there's a way to track this problem, it would be better to provide a more clear bug report

Expected:
- the system should run continuously with stability

Description: Ubuntu hardy (development branch)
Release: 8.04

don't know witch package affected yet

Hi jay3d,

Can you comment which specific version of the kernel you are running - cat /proc/version_signature . I know the 2.6.24-15 kernel was just published. Also could you attach your dmesg output - there might be something reported there that could be helpful. Thanks.

I am experiencing the same problem. However, I seem to be able to repeat this the most with playing audio and/or video in X. Playing audio in the console doesn't do it (that I can tell), but using Flash video, or closing FireFox after watching Flash video, and then using just about anything else that uses an overlay (including OpenGL) or audio may lock it up. In general, audio-only lock ups take a longer time to happen. I am interested in any ideas around this possibly being an I/O issue? I have not been able to see anything from dmesg. Follow the steps above, and it pauses for a full second or so, the screen goes black... and have to power off and back on. Or something, on this motherboard, seems like I have to hold the power button in, and then upon release, it restarts.

There is nothing i could do to reproduce the freeze, sometimes stable for a whole day, but today three times already. :( I also noticed that xine crashes (somethimes) when skipping forward, which it didn't do in previous releases.

I'm still having this random lock ups, completely random, almost no pattern at all. I say almost because I've noticed that it does happen a lot when displaying videos o web searching.

So have this random lock ups that seem to be disturbing a large number of users appeared during the previous alpha releases? Because if not, it would be a nice idea to check major changes involving multimedia and web exploring made from the last Alpha 6 release to the ultimate release.

Of course I have no knowledge on this things, I don't program, I know very little about linux and Ubuntu itself, I'm just trying to help and find out what is the status on this very awkward freeze that is haunting us.

Bye! Thanks!

I believe this bug may be a duplicate of #204996, which also describes a very difficult to trace problem with the kernel locking up, seemingly at random, with an enormous variety of hardware. Some people seem to have other symptoms (sounding more like X problems!), but I believe the core issue is the same there as it is here.

However, while I have done so for now, I am a tad hesitant to mark this as duplicate since the issue has created numerous bug reports, some of which could easily be "normal" driver problems. (Which makes this problem only more urgent: Something else is definitely causing lockups, and the longer that thing remains untraceable we have a big problem where all lockup problems are considered duplicates of this one).

So, if you have any objections to me marking this as a duplicate, make your voice known, feel free to change it back, etc.!

Sorry, I should add this!
You say that kernel panic stuff is not in the log. Does your caps lock key /blink/, or at least change from its original state, by any chance? Blinking the lock keys is one of the kernel's last-resort ways to report a kernel panic. The current lockup issue (which has become prevalent) is observed to kill hard drive access. (My suspicion is that is a bug of its own, then everything which does not kill disk access -- ie: Leaves a log -- is a different bug entirely).

Hi

I have the exact same problem as many Hardy users, random lock ups.
No indication in logs and no blinking lights - only way out is to press and hold power button in for 5 seconds and do a hard reset.

I have seen some patterns regarding this error, the following seems to trigger it:

1. Playing a DVD iso rip in xine locks the machine after around an hour
2. Using USB storage. Both when mounting and doing file operations. It happens both with flash memory and USB harddisks.

OS: Hardy Heron 8.04, with nvidia driver enabled in "Hardware Drivers".
Installed linux-backports-modules-2.6.24 according to Bug 203329 for my wireless.
