Okay, I've patched hal according to Benjamin's suggestion, and still no love.

Also, I'm not able to manually mount the device (it worked under Gutsy and on  my other Gentoo machine, but not under Hardy).  There is no device /dev/sdd1, despite whatever the dmesg reports.  Dmesg follows.
