Bug Description

Binary package hint: ubiquity

On an HP dv2000z laptop, I attempted to install the Hardy Beta x86_64 alongside WinXP on an 80GB drive. I manually partitioned the hd successfully, but the installer froze completely towards the end of the installation at "Removing Packages". After a hard shutdown, the computer refused to boot back to the BIOS screen, so I removed the primary battery for about 30 seconds. Then, it booted into a "grub>" terminal. I think WinXP partition is still on the hard drive someplace, but the GRUB installation must have gotten corrupted. This is scary.

I attempted to reinstall Hardy Beta again. This time the installation completed successfully. However, after booting into ubuntu, the system completely froze when downloading and installing updates through synaptic. The laptop froze when installing "ubuntu-docs"...not sure if the package has anything to do with the problem or not. Heat really seems to be an issue; it wasn't this bad with Gutsy. Perhaps, this heat is causing the laptop to have performance problems??? I hope not!

The installer's just a mostly ordinary program, and can't freeze the whole computer all by itself. This type of freeze has to be either a kernel bug or a hardware bug (although it might later be determined that there's a workaround of some kind in the installer). Reassigning over to linux.

Hi Gener,

Per the kernel team's bug policy, can you please attach the following information. Please be sure to attach each file as a separate attachment.

* cat /proc/version_signature > version.log
* dmesg > dmesg.log
* sudo lspci -vvnn > lspci-vvnn.log

I'm also curious if you experience the system freezing when attempting anything else other than downloading/installing updates.

For more information regarding the kernel team bug policy, please refer to https://wiki.ubuntu.com/KernelTeamBugPolicies . Thanks again and we appreciate your help and feedback.

Just completely froze again while trying to apply updates. I had to remove the laptop battery for the machine to boot back up properly. May be related to or be a duplicate of bug#204996.

Hi Gene,

Just to see if it makes a difference, care to test the upcoming Intrepid Ibex 8.10 kernel? It was most recently rebased with the upstream 2.6.25 kernel and is currently available in the following PPA:

https://edge.launchpad.net/~kernel-ppa/+archive

If you are not familiar with how to install packages from a PPA basically do the following . . .

Create the file /etc/apt/sources.list.d/kernel-ppa.list to include the following two lines:

deb http://ppa.launchpad.net/kernel-ppa/ubuntu hardy main
deb-src http://ppa.launchpad.net/kernel-ppa/ubuntu hardy main

Then run the command: sudo apt-get update

You should then be able to install the linux-image-2.6.25 kernel package. After you've finished testing you can remove the kernel-ppa.list file and run 'sudo apt-get update' once more. Please let us know your results. Thanks

Hi Leann,
I'm currently in the process of moving from Japan back
to the U.S. with limited access to my PCs (only my
eeepc). When I get settled back in the U.S., I'll be
glad to test it out. Actually, my HP Pavilion laptop
was the one with the freezing problem, but the
freezing issue appeared to be fixed after the 8.04RC.
I'll test and follow-up regardless.

Sincerely,
Gene

The Ubuntu Kernel Team is planning to move to the 2.6.27 kernel for the upcoming Intrepid Ibex 8.10 release. As a result, the kernel team would appreciate it if you could please test this newer 2.6.27 Ubuntu kernel. There are one of two ways you should be able to test:

1) If you are comfortable installing packages on your own, the linux-image-2.6.27-* package is currently available for you to install and test.

--or--

2) The upcoming Alpha5 for Intrepid Ibex 8.10 will contain this newer 2.6.27 Ubuntu kernel. Alpha5 is set to be released Thursday Sept 4. Please watch http://www.ubuntu.com/testing for Alpha5 to be announced. You should then be able to test via a LiveCD.

Please let us know immediately if this newer 2.6.27 kernel resolves the bug reported here or if the issue remains. More importantly, please open a new bug report for each new bug/regression introduced by the 2.6.27 kernel and tag the bug report with 'linux-2.6.27'. Also, please specifically note if the issue does or does not appear in the 2.6.26 kernel. Thanks again, we really appreicate your help and feedback.

Per a decision made by the Ubuntu Kernel Team, bugs will longer be assigned to the ubuntu-kernel-team in Launchpad as part of the bug triage process. The ubuntu-kernel-team is being unassigned from this bug report. Refer to https://wiki.ubuntu.com/KernelTeamBugPolicies for more information. Thanks.
