Bug Description

I got no sound in any application in Hardy beta (upgraded from Gutsy), kernel 2.6.24-12.22 both generic and rt. However in "System > Applications > Sound" I could hear test sound while choosing "ICE1712 multi" for my Terratec EWS88MT, but any tested setting in any application preferences did not give any sound.

Sounds worked fine (not in Amarok though) when starting with 2.6.22-14 generic kernel.

PulseAudio said everywhere "Connection failed: Connection refused", so that doesn't work at all.

I made fresh installation, now with Ubuntu Studio 8.04 beta. Only thing left from previous installation was the home directory. Re-installation made no difference.

I have amd64.

Found the setup for ALC883 now, and I guess I'll find that for TerraTec too. PulseAudio still in universal "Connection failed: Connection refused" state.

Care to attach the output from running the alsa-info.sh script as described here: https://wiki.ubuntu.com/DebuggingSoundProblems . Thanks.

Alsa-info.txt attached. Sound output now works also through alsa/ice1712. May be due to playing with default card settings or due to some update - most likely both. At least SPDIF input still dumb (I try to figure that out), and PulseAudio doesn't work at all.

Ok, it seems that pretty much everything else but PulseAudio is now running ok. I still have some XRUN issues while using Rosegarden and SoundFonts but I guess that doesn't belong here.

One Rosegarden crash report just in case.

I'm having a similar problem. Sound used to work in Hardy Beta and stopped. I can't play any sound using Rhythmbox or mplayer (videos work without the sound). In Rhythmbox, the 'play' button can be pressed, the progress bar doesn't move. I've been keeping the system updated so it might be a breakage induced by some of the updates. I've got a 3 year old laptop with an Intel integrated AC97 based soundcard.

The strange thing is that sound input (and some output) still works: When I don't mute the integrated mic, I can hear myself clicking (mic is just next to the touchpad).

Attached is the output of alsa-info.sh

Situation with pulseaudio is same under kernel 2.6.24-15.26 => "Connection failed: Connection refused".

Btw. I now have three automatically installed kernels after updates: 2.6.24-12-rt, 2.6.24-14-rt, and 2.6.24-15-rt. Is it okay to remove old ones or are they someday removed automatically?

fixed for me by installing the latest upgrades (w/ kernel 2.6.24-15 generic)

raulih, care to confirm if this is resolved for you as well with the latest updates? I do notice you are running the -rt flavor kernel so you may want to test with -generic. Thanks.

The Ubuntu Kernel Team is planning to move to the 2.6.27 kernel for the upcoming Intrepid Ibex 8.10 release. As a result, the kernel team would appreciate it if you could please test this newer 2.6.27 Ubuntu kernel. There are one of two ways you should be able to test:

1) If you are comfortable installing packages on your own, the linux-image-2.6.27-* package is currently available for you to install and test.

--or--

2) The upcoming Alpha5 for Intrepid Ibex 8.10 will contain this newer 2.6.27 Ubuntu kernel. Alpha5 is set to be released Thursday Sept 4. Please watch http://www.ubuntu.com/testing for Alpha5 to be announced. You should then be able to test via a LiveCD.

Please let us know immediately if this newer 2.6.27 kernel resolves the bug reported here or if the issue remains. More importantly, please open a new bug report for each new bug/regression introduced by the 2.6.27 kernel and tag the bug report with 'linux-2.6.27'. Also, please specifically note if the issue does or does not appear in the 2.6.26 kernel. Thanks again, we really appreicate your help and feedback.
