Fujitsu keyboard not working after updates

Bug Description

Ubuntu 22.04.3 LTS
Fujitsu Lifebook E5410

Expected to happen is that the keyboard is working as previous before the updates.

What instead happens is, that the keyboard is dead and does not work. Attaching an external USB-keyboard works. The keyboard works before boot in the BIOS context, so it is not hardware related.

There is another user reporting the same issue for a E5510 on ask Ubuntu.

Another user in the Ask Ubuntu thread reports, that the problem may be related to a false switch to tablet mode. I confirm the output of my device of "cat /sys/class/dmi/id/chassis_type" is "10". In addition: The E5410 is not a tablet nor a convertible, so it should not switch to tablet mode.

I found a solution that worked for me with ubuntu, although the solution is described for fedora.

https://discussion.fedoraproject.org/t/fujitsu-lifebook-e5510-keyboard-not-detected/70907/18

edit boot parameter in grub, usually after "quiet splash"

"i8042.nomux=1 i8042.reset"

result: "quiet splash i8042.nomux=1 i8042.reset"

worked for me

detailed doc for boot parameters:

https://wiki.ubuntu.com/Kernel/KernelBootParameters

as hint for urgend workaround: using standby and wake up again solved the problem for me too, as quick solution, if no external keyboard is available.

Bernd Müller (bmubul) wrote :

The work-around provided by Johannes does work for me.

sudo vi /etc/default/grub
# --
GRUB_CMDLINE_LINUX_DEFAULT="quiet splash i8042.nomux=1"
# --

Parameter i8042.reset is not working for me, but does not effect the outcome.

sudo update-grub

Rudi Mente (i2111) wrote (last edit ):

I had the same problem (keyboard not working, touchpad working) for a 6.x kernel. The workaround from Johannes and Bernd worked for me, though I only used "quiet splash i8042.nomux=1" and did not test the additional "i8042.reset".

System: Fujitsu Lifebook 7U15A1, Ubuntu 22.04.3 LTS, Kernel 6.2.0-36-generic x86_64

Btw: "cat /sys/class/dmi/id/chassis_type" still shows "10" and the Fujitsu 7U15A1 is not a tablet nor a convertible.

Same here, but please have in mind that the above solution only works for the default entry in grub, if you want to be sure use GRUB_CMDLINE_LINUX=i8042.nomux (=1 is obsolete according to docs) so it also works for the older kernel.

But thanks for the solution whover came up with it the first time!
