Sincere thanks, for the bug lookup. i do not write code etc. am user only.

i think this problem stemmed from my attempt to install a WLAN USB
tp-link AC600 device. And it was not simple - as such. To be honest it
was hit and miss.

Yes, that DKMS is not from Ubuntu and not supported. Remove it and retry the upgrade. Then install the DKMS from Ubuntu:
$ apt install rtl8812au-dkms
