I think it would be a great usability improvement. I searched a little and I found that sending proper commands to /proc/acpi/wakeup makes it works. Like:

"echo USB0 > /proc/acpi/wakeup" or "echo UHC1 > /proc/acpi/wakeup"

(identifier name may change through different machines)

I know I could just add an script to /etc/init.d/... to make this, but I'm reporting this as a bug because I think that, on Ubuntu, it's not expected you have to send messages to system devices/files on command line (or thinks like this) to make things "just work". Returning from suspend should feel as natural as coming back from the screen saver.

I'm not sure about the deep details, but looks easy to do this, maybe it's just changing a default setting or so.

If for some reason it can't be enabled by default, it would be nice to have this option in Power Management settings.

Maybe the same above could be considered to Wake on Lan, too.

Care to comment specifically which kernel version you are using (ie provide the output of cat /proc/version_signature). It's more helpful than just "affects current kernel version" as the current kernel is constantly changing. Thanks.

Anyway, the tested kernel is 2.6.24-12.22-generic, from Ubuntu Hardy. But the same happens to 2.6.22-14-generic from Gutsy Gibbon, and I'd guess it also happens to all prior versions.

Thanks for the info. The 'linux' package is actually the correct kernel source package for Hardy. Beginning with the Hardy development release, the kernel source package naming convention changed from linux-source-2.6.xx to just linux. I know there exists a linux-source-2.6.24 package which has caused some confusion to bug reporters, our apologies. Anyways, I'll reassign this to the kernel team. Thanks.

The Ubuntu Kernel Team is planning to move to the 2.6.27 kernel for the upcoming Intrepid Ibex 8.10 release. As a result, the kernel team would appreciate it if you could please test this newer 2.6.27 Ubuntu kernel. There are one of two ways you should be able to test:

1) If you are comfortable installing packages on your own, the linux-image-2.6.27-* package is currently available for you to install and test.

--or--

2) The upcoming Alpha5 for Intrepid Ibex 8.10 will contain this newer 2.6.27 Ubuntu kernel. Alpha5 is set to be released Thursday Sept 4. Please watch http://www.ubuntu.com/testing for Alpha5 to be announced. You should then be able to test via a LiveCD.

Please let us know immediately if this newer 2.6.27 kernel resolves the bug reported here or if the issue remains. More importantly, please open a new bug report for each new bug/regression introduced by the 2.6.27 kernel and tag the bug report with 'linux-2.6.27'. Also, please specifically note if the issue does or does not appear in the 2.6.26 kernel. Thanks again, we really appreicate your help and feedback.

I can confirm that this bug still exists in the current Intrepid beta, kernel 2.6.27-7-generic. By default, neither my usb mouse nor usb keyboard will wake the system from a suspended state.

great info Roberto,Thanks for the homework you did on /proc/acpi/wakeup,I now can resume from suspend by tabbing the keyboard,verses having to hit the power button.
I totally agree that it should be part of the default power management in Gnome...
