Problem is worse with kernel 5.15.0-22, while in distros providing 5.16.11+ and 5.17 kernels the problem is gone. Now in 5.15.0-22, no video ever shows up after the Grub selection is made. The PC apparently hard locks immediately with black screen when two displays are connected, even when only one is powered on.

Original problem continues with kernel 5.15.0-23, but there is more than a screenful of fb output in what appears to be 1024x768 mode before lockup on switch to i915. Xorg is working normally with only one connected display.
