post upgrade, no video after suspend

Suspend on desktop worked fine before upgrade to impish. Post upgrade, coming up after suspend leaves monitors with no signal from nvidia graphics card.

I don't think the computer is coming up at all after suspend? Commands typed blindly into an xterm window don't run and "systemctl suspend ; sleep 10 ; cp /var/log/dmesg FILE" in csh doesn't make a file after waking.

Persists on upgrade to 22.04 Jammy.

Tried some web solutions:
* adding "amd_iommu=off" to grub - nope!
* switching to lightdm - already was using - nope!
* not enough swap space - but have 3x memory - nope!
