Bug Description

I'm running Ubuntu 20.04.1 on a Intel NUC9.
My USB keyboard is working fine with kernel 5.4.0-64 but doesn't work at all with the 5.8.0-40 kernel. I tested other external keyboards but none worked.
My mouse is working fine though.

Looks like usbhid doesn't probe the keyboard.
Please test latest mainline kernel:

Hi,
I started Ubuntu 20.10 on a USB Key and the keyboard was working fine on kernel 5.8.0-25.
I "kind of" installed the last 5.11-rc4 kernel on my Ubuntu 20.04 and the keyboard was working fine too (I were only able to test it in a terminal mode).

Since Bus and Devices values where differents in `lsusb` outputs, I thought maybe the Intel Bluetooth chipset was conflicting with other USB devices. I disabled it in the bios as well as blacklisted all bluetooth drivers throught a /etc/modprobe.d/blacklist-bluetooth.conf file, but nothing worked.

So I don't know, maybe there's an USB cache somewhere and a clean reinstall would solve the issue or maybe something has been broken after 5.8.0-25 and fixed in 5.11-rc4.

Anyhow I'll stick back on a 5.4 kernel for now and check if the issue will disapear by itself.

Thank you for the help.

I had this issue with ubuntu 20.04 and hoped it would get fixed in ubunutu 21.04 but it did not so the Kernel 5.11 also does not work and I have to keep using the old Kernel 5.4. I have never reported anything here before today, do you need more info? My laptop is an msi ps42 and a Logitech external usb keyboard

Would it be possible for you to do a kernel bisection?

First, find the last -rc kernel works and the first -rc kernel doesn’t work from http://kernel.ubuntu.com/~kernel-ppa/mainline/

Then,
$ sudo apt build-dep linux
$ git clone git://git.kernel.org/pub/scm/linux/kernel/git/torvalds/linux.git
$ cd linux
$ git bisect start
$ git bisect good $(the working version you found)
$ git bisect bad $(the non-working version found)
$ make localmodconfig
$ make -j`nproc` deb-pkg
Install the newly built kernel, then reboot with it.
If it still have the same issue,
$ git bisect bad
Otherwise,
$ git bisect good
Repeat to "make -j`nproc` deb-pkg" until you find the offending commit.
