I can confirm this issue on both a Dell 3610 and an Asus P9X79WS. Apport will not generate a report. It reports:

*** PulseAudio seems to have crashed. Do you wish to report a bug?

*** Problem in pulseaudio

The problem cannot be reported:

This is not an official KDE package. Please remove any third party package and try again.

This issue has also been reported on reddit. Also on https://askubuntu.com/questions/1305763/no-audio-after-apt-upgrade-with-new-pkgs-ubuntu-20-04-lts .

In my testing I performed the usual steps to get pulse audio working which failed. The issue happens when upgrading from config-5.8.0-34-generic to config-5.8.0-36-generic on a KDE Neon platform. Each machine has an NVidia display and the proprietary driver. The NVidia driver was update during the same from 418.152.00 to 450.102.04. KDE Neon was upgraded from 5.20.4 to 5.20.5 in the same cycle. I prepared a machine with a configuration just prior to the update and so far believe the issue is NOT related to the KDE 5.20.5 update. But some either the kernel or some interaction with the NVidia driver. I will try to isolate the kernel from the Nividia driver but the above link seems to point to the audio driver missing from the kernel.

The issue also causes the system to fail to detect a Logitech USB Webcam and and external USB headphone (effectively its own sound card). Both devices are recognized as USB devices but not as input or output media devices.

Audio: Device-1: NVIDIA GM204 High Definition Audio driver: N/A

I get the same output for pulseaudio -vvv and alsamixer as shown in the link.

On all three installations I can run the command "lspci -v | grep snd". As far as can tell this update does not have the sound modules as part of its kernel.

The fix identified by https://askubuntu.com/a/1307216/1168625 works (tested on two workstations).

Quoting: The snd-intel-dspcfg module ... had been moved to the linux-modules-extra- package. So I had to install that package, since it hasn't been installed by default since 5.4.0-60.67

sudo apt install linux-modules-extra-5.8.0-36-generic

(or use pkcon)

I believe there are some duplicates to this issue that have popped up since the release of 5.8.0-37-generic

I am using KDE Neon 20.04. During earlier attempts to debug the issue I removed the .config/pulse directory and permitted it to be rebuilt. Combined with the additional library and a reboot, it remade the config for the sound devices.
