Bug Description

The GUI randomly freezes around every 10-15 minutes. This last for about 15-20 seconds before it gets back to normal.

It started a few weeks ago. I can see entries in dmesg when this happens that make me suspect that it is caused by iwlwifi and/or a related driver of the Intel Wireless-AC 9260.

1) $ lsb_release -rd
Description: Ubuntu 20.04 LTS
Release: 20.04

2) I am not sure what package is in use but I can point to the firmware used by the adapter:

# ls /lib/firmware/iwlwifi-9260-th-b0-jf-b0-*
/lib/firmware/iwlwifi-9260-th-b0-jf-b0-33.ucode
/lib/firmware/iwlwifi-9260-th-b0-jf-b0-34.ucode

/lib/firmware/iwlwifi-9260-th-b0-jf-b0-43.ucode
/lib/firmware/iwlwifi-9260-th-b0-jf-b0-46.ucode

3) What you expected to happen

The interface not to freeze.

4) What happened instead

The interface freezes sometimes leaving the last key pressed stucked. If it the key was delete it will have deleted all the text when it unfreezes.

Thank you for taking the time to report this bug and helping to make Ubuntu better. It seems that your bug report is not filed about a specific source package though, rather it is just filed against Ubuntu in general. It is important that bug reports be filed about source packages so that people interested in the package can find the bugs about it. You can find some hints about determining what package your bug might be about at https://wiki.ubuntu.com/Bugs/FindRightPackage. You might also ask for help in the #ubuntu-bugs irc channel on Freenode.

To change the source package that this bug is filed about visit https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+bug/1885266/+editstatus and add the package name in the text box next to the word Package.

This bug is missing log files that will aid in diagnosing the problem. While running an Ubuntu kernel (not a mainline or third-party kernel) please enter the following command in a terminal window:

apport-collect 1885266

and then change the status of the bug to 'Confirmed'.

If, due to the nature of the issue you have encountered, you are unable to run this command, please add a comment stating that fact and change the bug status to 'Confirmed'.

This change has been made by an automated script, maintained by the Ubuntu Kernel Team.

Hi, you mentioned this started a couple weeks ago. Do you have idea when/which kernel version starts this regression? You may want to try following command to find it or some other commands that fits you most:

  $ for c in $(seq 1 100); do \
      test -z "$(journalctl -b -$c | grep iwl_trans_pcie_release_nic_access)" || \
        (journalctl -b -$c --no-hostname | grep 'Command line:'); \
    done

And, Would it be possible for you to test the latest upstream kernel? Refer to https://wiki.ubuntu.com/KernelMainlineBuilds . Please test the latest kernel in https://kernel.ubuntu.com/~kernel-ppa/mainline/.

If this bug is fixed in the mainline kernel, please add the following tag 'kernel-fixed-upstream'.

If the mainline kernel does not fix this bug, please add the tag: 'kernel-bug-exists-upstream'.

Once testing of the upstream kernel is complete, please mark this bug as "Confirmed”, and attach dmesg.

Thanks in advance.

I wish I could place a date on when the issues started. My guess is that it was either late May or early June. The issue happens quite frequently in the last updates and now I get sometimes a black screen on the laptop while the external monitor remains working. A restart of the system brings things back to work but the freezes quite happening maybe even more frequently now.

I will try the mainline kernel and report results. The list of kernels I had in the system as per your command is below.

I would say that version 5.4.0-29 was definitely working fine and that it was one of the 5.4.0-3x release that started the problem.

Could you clarify if you want me to test the latest mainline kernel (5.8) or the latest in the 5.4?
