Bug Description

There seems to be some changes in ALSA in 5.3.0.41 and it seems to have caused some regression on my HP Spectrre (details attached).

~$ alsactl init
alsactl: init:1759: No soundcards found...

I verified that 5.3.0.40 works.

The same kernel update broke suspend: after resuming, the mouse and keyboard don't work -- just reporting here in case this helps locate the core issue.

5.3.0-43 is in the proposed, please try -43 kernel.

I have the same issue using notebook Dell G3-3590-A20P, my sound and microphone was gone when updated to Kernel 5.3.0-42.

Hos to upgrade to Linux Kernel 5.3.0-43?

I installed kernel 5.3.0-050300 and sound and microphone works fine:

I'm using Ubuntu 18.04.04 on Dell G3 3590-A20P.

I have the same problem on a Dell Inspiron 7590 (see #1868465). Suspend was also not properly working. The proposed kernel 5.3.0-43 on Eoan does not fix the missing sound device bug for me.

@Jeremy,

please upload dmesg with the kernel 5.3.0-43.

thx.

Please find dmesg output. I also verified that the linux-firmware package is not corrupted.

@jeremy,

upgrade your linux-firmware.

sudo apt install linux-firmware.

@hui - I had the linux-firmware at the latest in the standard upgrades. I've just upgraded to updates-proposed (linux-firmware 1.183.5), but it still doesn't work:

[ 8.926091] sof-audio-pci 0000:00:1f.3: Direct firmware load for intel/sof/sof-cfl.ri failed with error -2
[ 8.926093] sof-audio-pci 0000:00:1f.3: error: request firmware intel/sof/sof-cfl.ri failed err: -2

I can't see any file sof-cfl.ri in the linux-firmware package.

Oh, it is a coffeelake machine. We don't support it yet. You could have a try with "sudo ln -s /lib/firmware/intel/sof-cnl.ri /lib/firmware/intel/sof-cfl.ri", then reboot. If it doesn't work, you could raise an issue on this website, maybe Intel could recommend the correct kernel and firmware. https://github.com/thesofproject/linux/issues/new

@hui Can you not revert the change to -40 version, as this is quite a serious regression in the middle of a release? The symlink works for me, however.

@Jeremy,

Many machines have their internal mic connected to the PCH, to make the internal mic work, the kernel needs those changes. And if you want the sound to work as before with -43 kernel, you could add "snd-hda-intel dmic_detect=0" in the /etc/modprobe.d/alsa-base.conf, then the audio will work as -40 or before.

thx.

Hi!

Sound still not working on -45, confirmed working on -40. Running Ubuntu 18.04.4 on Lenovo X1C 7th gen (just like https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/linux/+bug/1868165).

cheers

Same here with an Acer Swift SF314-56G. Sound does not work on -45 but works on -46 (from proposed).

@Arnau: It looks like yours is a coffeelake machine, like mine, which they don't support (see #12). The sound output worked originally in Ubuntu, but it was broken by these updates.

@Arnau,

Yes, just like Jeremy said, the firmware of cfl is not in the 19.10 or 18.04 yet. you could add the workaround of snd_hda_intel.dmic_detect=0 or manually ln a sof-cfl.ri, if it works well, I will consult with intel and add that link to ubuntu.

thx.

@Arnau,

According to dmesg2, the firmware is still not loaded successfully. If you really created symlink for sof-cfl.ri, it looks like the firmware sof-cnl.ri is not suitable for cfl platform. please double check the symlink is correct: ls -la /lib/firmware/intel/sof

@hui: okay, now it works, had to do "sudo ln -s /lib/firmware/intel/sof/sof-cnl.ri /lib/firmware/intel/sof/sof-cfl.ri", instead of "sudo ln -s /lib/firmware/intel/sof-cnl.ri /lib/firmware/intel/sof-cfl.ri" as in #12
