Bug Description

"lsb_release -rd" output:
  Description: Ubuntu 18.04.4 LTS
  Release: 18.04

So, my linux kernel was updated to 5.3.0-40 today, and my wifi adapter is no longer functional. When I run "lshw", the usb-1 device is detected, but is "UNCLAIMED".
Booting with the previous kernel works, so I figured it's a kernel problem.

Thank you for taking the time to report this bug and helping to make Ubuntu better. It seems that your bug report is not filed about a specific source package though, rather it is just filed against Ubuntu in general. It is important that bug reports be filed about source packages so that people interested in the package can find the bugs about it. You can find some hints about determining what package your bug might be about at https://wiki.ubuntu.com/Bugs/FindRightPackage. You might also ask for help in the #ubuntu-bugs irc channel on Freenode.

To change the source package that this bug is filed about visit https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+bug/1863769/+editstatus and add the package name in the text box next to the word Package.

I'm having the same issue. I've tried loading older kernels. Kernel 4.20-17 doesn't work. It renders the machine basically unusable.

@Kostas, we need you to follow #2 to collect debug logs so that further investigation would be possible. You may need to find some USB ether dongle or so to establish a valid network connection before being able to submit the report in regard to that broken WiFi interface.

For others, please file new bugs if you're not sure they're confirmed identical.

Should be a duplicate of bug 1865962, which was currently only fixed in 5.4.0-18 or newer in Focal. Is it possible for you to try Focal kernel?

Thanks for working on that bug but I have to say that this is ridiculous. A kernel update gets pushed with a mayor regression that breaks Wifi and it takes over one month to fix that. This is just bad.
