Bug Description

Hi there,

Laptop: Dell XPS 13 7390 2-in-1
Built-in wireless: Killer Wi-Fi 6 AX1650i 160MHz

iwlwifi worked fine with 19.10 but breaks when upgrading to 20.04. Firmware crashes after loading and interface doesn't show up.

This is with:
linux-image-5.4.0-9-generic 5.4.0-9.12
linux-firmware 1.184

I've noticed the driver was trying to load a more recent firmware:
Direct firmware load for iwlwifi-Qu-b0-hr-b0-50.ucode failed with error -2

I've downloaded this file from upstream iwlwifi firmware git and tried unloading/reloading iwlwifi. Driver crashes as well, but with a different error code.

Best,
- LM

Hi, could you also try https://vicamo.gitlab.io/-/backport-iwlwifi-dkms/-/jobs/401941479/artifacts/aptly/index.html ? This is the unofficial backport-iwlwifi-dkms apt from daily CI. Please have a try and attach dmesg log. If this still fails, then we'd need a public bug for Intel.

I don't have the same XPS 13 but a Dell Inspiron 5493. It has a wifi controller with the same PCI ID but a different subsystem ID (8086.42a4), and it works fine.

Kernel: 5.4.0-17-generic
linux-firmware: 1.186

Will find an XPS 13 and wifi device with same subsystem ID to test.

Just to confirm that I still have broken WiFi with linux-image-5.4.0-14-generic 5.4.0-14.17 (but it works with linux-image-5.3.0-26-generic 5.3.0-26.28 and worked with iwlwifi backports when I tried).

Should also mention I've upgraded all packages to latest in focal including linux-firmware 1.186.

This issue reappeared on kernel 5.6.0 for me :/
The wifi networks are shown but connections cannot be build, they timeout. I am back on 5.5.13 now with 20.04.
