Bug Description

Binary package hint: linux-source-2.6.22

My laptop (averatec 2150, AMD Turion 64 bit, ATI Radeon Xpress 200M) resumes fine after suspend-to-RAM but it freezes after several seconds. Just when you think everything is back to normal, keyboard and mouse stop working. After this, there is no way other than a hard reboot.

$uname -a
Linux narmada 2.6.22-14-generic #1 SMP Tue Dec 18 08:02:57 UTC 2007 i686 GNU/Linux

I am using the stock 32 bit kernel. Moved to this for various reasons - including getting wireless working properly. In feisty, amd64 kernel, I can still suspend/hibernate w/o any issues. I am dual booting feisty/gutsy - so let me know if you need any information from that part.

Will attach dmesg.log as mentioned in https://wiki.ubuntu.com/DebuggingKernelSuspend

The Hardy Heron Alpha series is currently under development and contains an updated version of the kernel. It would be helpful if you could test the latest Hardy Alpha release: http://www.ubuntu.com/testing . You should be able to then test the new kernel via the LiveCD. If you can, please verify if this bug still exists or not and report back your results. Thanks.

I installed hardy alpha 6 in my system for testing purposes:

$uname -a
Linux narmada 2.6.24-12-generic #1 SMP Wed Mar 12 22:31:43 UTC 2008 x86_64 GNU/Linux

In Hardy, there is only blank screen after resume and the system hangs. I need to do a hard reboot to get out of this. Attached dmesg.txt as mentioned in DebuggingKernelSuspend

 Magic number: 0:716:379
[ 10.496721] hash matches /build/buildd/linux-2.6.24/drivers/base/power/main.c:97
[ 10.496873] /build/buildd/linux-2.6.24/drivers/rtc/hctosys.c: unable to open rtc device (rtc0)

Let me know if you need any other information.

Howdy!

I have the same issue, but with some interesting additions.

So my laptop is an nx6110, with a Pentium M processor. Suspend works fine, but many a time resume results in a blank screen (I think its still off), the hard disk light glows for some 10 seconds steadily and then nothing happens.

Even at this seemingly crashed state I can resume by pressing the power button many times: (it seems I have to press the power button for some 1 second and then leave it) after some three-four trials, voila -- it resumes!

This is *not* a hardware issue, since it works fine with gutsy and some older kernels (it breaks between 2.6.24-5 and 2.6.24-7)

Please let me know what kind of debug information should I get you, and how to get it!

Thanks,
--Arnold

Launchpad Janitor (janitor) wrote : This bug is now reported against the 'linux' package

Beginning with the Hardy Heron 8.04 development cycle, all open Ubuntu kernel bugs need to be reported against the "linux" kernel package. We are automatically migrating this bug to the new "linux" package. However, development has already began for the upcoming Intrepid Ibex 8.10 release. It would be helpful if you could test the upcoming release and verify if this is still an issue - http://www.ubuntu.com/testing . If the issue still exists, please update this report by changing the Status of the "linux" task from "Incomplete" to "New". We appreciate your patience and understanding as we make this transition. Thanks!

The Ubuntu Kernel Team is planning to move to the 2.6.27 kernel for the upcoming Intrepid Ibex 8.10 release. As a result, the kernel team would appreciate it if you could please test this newer 2.6.27 Ubuntu kernel. There are one of two ways you should be able to test:

1) If you are comfortable installing packages on your own, the linux-image-2.6.27-* package is currently available for you to install and test.

--or--

2) The upcoming Alpha5 for Intrepid Ibex 8.10 will contain this newer 2.6.27 Ubuntu kernel. Alpha5 is set to be released Thursday Sept 4. Please watch http://www.ubuntu.com/testing for Alpha5 to be announced. You should then be able to test via a LiveCD.

Please let us know immediately if this newer 2.6.27 kernel resolves the bug reported here or if the issue remains. More importantly, please open a new bug report for each new bug/regression introduced by the 2.6.27 kernel and tag the bug report with 'linux-2.6.27'. Also, please specifically note if the issue does or does not appear in the 2.6.26 kernel. Thanks again, we really appreicate your help and feedback.

Launchpad Janitor (janitor) wrote : Kernel team bugs

Per a decision made by the Ubuntu Kernel Team, bugs will longer be assigned to the ubuntu-kernel-team in Launchpad as part of the bug triage process. The ubuntu-kernel-team is being unassigned from this bug report. Refer to https://wiki.ubuntu.com/KernelTeamBugPolicies for more information. Thanks.

I no longer see this issue in 2.6.27-9 kernel in intrepid. I am able to suspend/resume w/o any issues. Thanks!
