hardy AMD64 kernel panic on boot

Bug Description

Binary package hint: kernel-image-2.6.24-4-generic-di

When booting hardy images on my AMD64 box, I get a kernel panic immediately. I've tried the alpha3 image and the snapshot from 1/20/08.
HW:
Athlon64 x2 BE-2400
4 GB ram
Asus m2a-vm hdmi motherboard (AMD 690G chipset)
sata HD
sata DVD
sata set to AHCI mode in the bios (tried IDE mode, no difference)

See attached image for call traces. Unfortunately, there seems to be several places where the kernel panics (very depending on reboot).

I've run memtest86 for several hours and no problems came up so it doesn't appear to be a ram issue.

I also tried an old feisty herd2 AMD64 CD and it panics as well. different panic though...

Looks like it may be a bios issue. I hardcoded the RAM voltage rather than setting it to [auto] in the bios and now it seems to work,

Hello same problem here.
Tried all these:
ubuntu 7.10 32bits --> all perfect, no problems, all hardware detected, no drivers to install (like a dream!)
ubuntu 7.10 64bits --> as soon as kernel loads get kernel panic, segmentation faults, syncing errors
ubuntu 7.10 64bits alternate cd --> same result
hardy 64bits alternated cd San Valentines built -> same result

My motherboard is:

   GA-945PL-S3P (rev. 6.6) Intel 945 + ICH7 chipset plus intel dualcore 4500 cpu
Tried both with stock bios (F3) and latest bios (F5c) and still no good.

I cannot tell whether the issue is the same, but the Ubuntu 8.04-beta as well as -rc (both are desktop amd64 versions) keep crashing immediately upon boot on an AMD64 system with 4GB of RAM here. Adding a mem= boot option to restrict memory to 3GB helps (but cannot get passed to the disk check nor the memtest, which crashes, too).

Ubuntu 7.10 as well as Knoppix 5.3 and some Debian 4 based VDR system run fine on this very machine. Although all of them are 32bit versions, the Ubuntu 8.04 CDs were the only 64bit software which I've tried so far.

I'm following up here since no other report with the "panic" or "kernelpanic" keywords seems to apply to what I'm experiencing.

The Ubuntu Kernel Team is planning to move to the 2.6.27 kernel for the upcoming Intrepid Ibex 8.10 release. As a result, the kernel team would appreciate it if you could please test this newer 2.6.27 Ubuntu kernel. There are one of two ways you should be able to test:

1) If you are comfortable installing packages on your own, the linux-image-2.6.27-* package is currently available for you to install and test.

--or--

2) The upcoming Alpha5 for Intrepid Ibex 8.10 will contain this newer 2.6.27 Ubuntu kernel. Alpha5 is set to be released Thursday Sept 4. Please watch http://www.ubuntu.com/testing for Alpha5 to be announced. You should then be able to test via a LiveCD.

Please let us know immediately if this newer 2.6.27 kernel resolves the bug reported here or if the issue remains. More importantly, please open a new bug report for each new bug/regression introduced by the 2.6.27 kernel and tag the bug report with 'linux-2.6.27'. Also, please specifically note if the issue does or does not appear in the 2.6.26 kernel. Thanks again, we really appreicate your help and feedback.

I will test the live cd.
The PC at the moment is running happily ubuntu 8.04 32bit fully up-to-date
on patches.
I was never able to boot a 64bit ubuntu cd on that machine

Can you also confirm this issue exists with the most recent Karmic Koala 9.10 Alpha release? ISO CD images are available at http://cdimage.ubuntu.com/releases/karmic/ . If the issue remains with Karmic it would be great to then also test the latest upstream mainline kernel available. This will allow additional upstream developers to examine this issue. Refer to https://wiki.ubuntu.com/KernelMainlineBuilds . Thanks in advance.
